  • Fresh Market navigates weather-related challenges in Q1

    Although Fresh Market’s net sales exceeded Wall Street expectations, the company reported a decrease in profit for the first quarter of fiscal 2014, which it attributed to a slow start to the year brought on by severe weather in the majority of its markets.

    Net sales increased 18% to $431 million from $366.63 million in the prior-year quarter, while net income fell 25% to $16.57 million from $22.12 million in the prior-year quarter. Same-store sales climbed 2.5%.

  • Sprouts Farmers Market appoints HR chief

    Sprouts Farmers Market has appointed Nancy LaMons as chief human resources officer.

    LaMons was most recently as chief people officer at the Fiesta Restaurant Group. Previously, LaMons held senior positions at J.C. Penney and PepsiCo. LaMons has a bachelor’s degree in finance, an MBA with an emphasis on human resources, labor and industrial relations, and an Ed.M. with an emphasis in organization and leadership development.

  • Greenpeace awards Whole Foods top marks for sustainability

    Whole Foods has earned the top spot in Greenpeace’s annual seafood sustainability ranking of U.S. supermarkets, claiming both the highest overall score and the strongest sustainable seafood policy. Whole Foods Market has been ranked first for the last two years in a row for the fourth time since 2008.

  • Topco Associates taps CPG veteran as VP, marketing

    Topco Associates has appointed Linda Severin as VP, marketing. Severin will report directly to Topco president and CEO Randy Skoda.

    “Linda brings a wealth of knowledge in branding and marketing to Topco that will benefit all our members,” Skoda said. “She has built and developed successful private label brands for industry leaders, and we are confident she will drive competitive advantage for our products and strong results for our members in their retail stores.”

  • Costco opens in Spain

    New York -- Costco Wholesale Corp. has opened its first store in continental Europe, a 140,000-sq.-ft. location in Seville, Spain.

    Costco will follow it up with a store in Madrid, according to media reports.

     

  • Whole Foods opens Oregon store May 21

    Austin, Texas – Whole Foods Market is thrilled opens a new location at Greenway Town Center in Tigard, Oregon, on May 21. The store will feature products from local producers, a community art installation, LED lighting, recycled building materials, a fire pit, and a three-season outdoor seating area for about 60 customers.

    In that capacity Gose will oversee the day-to-day operation and management of the company’s stores. He reports to COO Kurt Schertle.

  • Sales at Stater Bros. up despite Easter holiday shift

    Stater Bros. chairman, president and CEO Jack H. Brown was pleased with the company’s second-quarter performance especially given the challenging environment.

    Consolidated sales in the 13 weeks ended March 30 totaled $963.8 million, up $1.9 million (or 0.2%) from the previous year. Sales for the 26 weeks ended March 30, 2014 were $1.95 billion, representing a $17.2 million (or 0.9 %) increase from the same period in the prior year.

  • Slate Properties acquires Mulberry Square in Milford, Ohio

    Milford, Ohio — Slate Properties has acquired Mulberry Square in Milford, Ohio, part of the greater Cincinnati metropolitan area. Slate paid $15.6 million for the 146,730-sq.-ft. community center, which is anchored by Kroger, Petco and Planet Fitness. Inline tenants include Steak and Shake, Hallmark, H&R Block, GNC and The UPS Store.

    Mid-America Real Estate Corp. in cooperation with NAI Bergman represented the seller, a private real estate investment firm, in the transaction.
