    Meriden, Conn. -- Vestis Retail Group, which operates Bob’s Stores, Eastern Mountain Sports and Sport Chalet, has Susan J. “Sue” Riley to CFO.

    Riley brings 30 years of financial management to her new role at Vestis, where she worked on a consulting basis as interim CFO in recent months.

  • Petland hires ex-Walmart exec as it aims to expand

    Petland has hired a former Walmart executive as vice president of corporate stores as the pet supply retailer looks to expand its national footprint. 

    Although Tony Samples last worked at Walmart in 2006, Petland touted his Walmart experience in a news release. "Tony brings extensive retail experience to Petland at a time when Petland is expanding its retail footprint," said Petland President and CEO Joe Watson. Samples will lead Petland's retail store division and oversee the company's merchandising and marketing efforts.

  • Bayer launches redevelopment of historic Pizitz Building

    Birmingham, Ala. -- Bayer Properties has begun construction on the $66 million redevelopment of the historic Pizitz Building, located on the corner of 2nd Avenue North and 19th Street in downtown Birmingham, Alabama.

    The building’s top six floors will be dedicated to residential space with 143 multi-family apartments. The Pizitz Building will also have a mezzanine level with modern, temporary office space, a ground level featuring a public urban market, and an attached seven-level parking garage.

  • Starboard to Staples: Improve your board

    New York – Activist investor Starboard Value LP, which holds a 4.5% ownership stake in Staples Inc., is telling Staples it needs to improve its board of directors to complete a proposed acquisition of Office Depot. In an open letter to members of the Staples board from Starboard Value managing member Jeffrey C. Smith, the combined companies’ board must have the “proper skill set” in place to oversee the integration.

  • American Eagle soars past Street in Q4; promotes brand heads

    Pittsburgh – American Eagle Outfitters Inc. soared past Wall Street expectations in the fourth quarter, helped by reduced promotions and discounts and the elimination of asset impairments. The teen retailer on Wednesday posted better-than-expected fourth quarter results and issued an upbeat outlook for the first quarter, projecting earnings of $0.09 to $0.12 per share, versus analysts' estimates of $0.07 per share.
