  • Francesca’s Q3 net income falls 19% amid higher costs; lowers outlook

    Houston –  Francesca’s Holding Corp. reported that its net income dropped 19% to $7.3 million in the third quarter of fiscal 2014 from $8.7 million the same period the prior year. Increases in cost of goods sold and selling, general and administrative (SG&A) expenses drove the decline in profit.  The specialty retailer also lowered its earnings outlook for the year.   Francesca’s plans to open one new store in the fourth quarter, bringing total new stores opened in the fiscal year to 88.
  • Walmart names Judith McKenna COO; Gisel Ruiz appointed EVP of Walmart’s International People Division

    BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Walmart Stores on Wednesday announced that Judith McKenna has been promoted to COO for Walmart U.S. McKenna succeeds Gisel Ruiz, who has been appointed EVP of Walmart’s International People Division.    McKenna will assume her responsibilities immediately and will continue to report directly to Walmart U.S. president and CEO, Greg Foran. Ruiz will also assume her responsibilities immediately and will report to Walmart International president and CEO, David Cheesewright.   
  • Study: Gift card sales to surpass $124 billion

    Arlington, Va. - Gift cards will surpass $124 billion in sales in 2014, up 5% from 2013. According to from advisory firm CEB TowerGroup, the gift card market should undergo an annual growth rate of 5-6% through 2017, but double-digit growth rates experienced in recent years have peaked and subsided.  
  • Nic & Zoe springs into brick-and-mortar

    Natick, Mass. – For fashion brand Nic & Zoe, which recently opened its first brick-and-mortar store in Boston’s Shops at Prudential Center, the high degree of customer personalization and engagement found online is a routine and expected part of business. The company is using the Retail Cloud POS solution from Springboard Retail to bring personalized sales and customer engagement in the store closer to virtual levels.  
  • Study – Smartphone revenue doubles in second week of holiday shopping

    Petaluma, Calif. – During the second week of the holiday shopping season (Dec. 1-7), smartphone and tablet shoppers were especially generous spenders. According to data compiled by e-commerce software provider MarketLive, year-over-year online revenue generated by consumers using smartphones grew 107%, or slightly more than double.  
  • Conn’s names interim CFO, reports net loss

    The Woodlands, Texas – Conn’s Inc. has named VP and chief accounting officer Mark Haley as interim CFO in the wake of the departure of former CFO Brian Taylor. The company also reported a net loss of $3.06 million in the third quarter of fiscal 2015, compared to net income of $24.38 million a year earlier, missing Wall Street expectations.

  • Report: American Dream to open—finally—in 2016

    New York - The long delayed American Dream mega-mall and entertainment project at the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, New Jersey,  will open—at least partially— in the fall of 2016 and has signed on such tenants as Victoria’s Secret, Saks Fifth Avenue, Lord & Taylor and Gap and an array of restaurant and entertainment destinations, including a Cirque du Soleil theatre, according to The Record.
