    The spring and summer has brought with it a flurry of new store concepts, from established players, international newcomers and online stars. Check out the six below.

  • City Sports names retail veteran as CEO

    Boston -- A veteran retailer with experience in running big national chains has joined City Sports as its new chief executive.

    The Boston-based company tapped Marty Hanaka, who has served on the board of directors of City Sports since 2008, as its new chief executive. Hanaka was the interim CEO of Guitar Center from January 2013 to April 2013. Previously, he served as CEO of Golfsmith Holdings (from June 2008 to November 2012) and of The Sports Authority (from September 1998 to August 2003.) Prior to that, he was the president and COO of Staples.

  • J. Crew’s new Mercantile store concept … what’s all the fuss about?

    New York -- J.Crew Group is not breaking any new ground with its latest retail format, Mercantile, which recently opened its first location, in Dallas.

    The budget-friendly store, in The Shops at Park Lane, is very similar to J.Crew’s factory outlet concept, reports Business Insider, particularly in its pricing and merchandise mix.

  • Retail disposition firm buys daily deal platform

    Northbrook, Ill. - Hilco Merchant Resources LLC (HMR), a provider of retail disposition services such as liquidation and acquisitions, has purchased online retail and daily deal e-commerce platform Deal Genius LLC.

    Deal Genius was launched as a flash retail sales web business in 2004. The site delivers daily deals on brand name home goods, apparel, consumer electronics, pet supplies and other merchandise.  The company was founded by CEO Chris Matsakis, who will continue in that role going forward.  

  • Report: Is Amazon faster than a Jet?

    Hoboken, N.J. – Early results indicate Amazon.com may be getting beaten by upstart e-commerce rival Jet.com on price, but Amazon is still outdoing the new kid on the online retail block in one key area. According to data from cloud services provider Instart Logic, the Jet.com homepage takes 25% longer to load than Amazon’s homepage.

  • Amazon wants to help retailers do everything

    Seattle – Amazon.com continues its evolution into a full-service technology platform with three services essentially designed to help retailers do everything. These services include support for start-ups, expansion of the Amazon Aurora database engine, and a hosted fulfillment/logistics platform.

  • What’s an Intern Innovate-a-Thon? Ask Kohl’s.

    Milpitas, Calif. – Some interested students are getting a hands-on education courtesy of Kohl’s.

    Kohl’s Digital Center, in Milpitas, Calif., is home to a summer internship program that gives students a first-hand look about the role technology plays in retail. On July 23, Kohl’s interns took part in Kohl’s first ever Intern Innovate-a-Thon.

  • Supervalu considers spinning off its best banner

    Minneapolis – Supervalu Inc. beat Wall Street expectations for profit in the first quarter of fiscal 2016 and also announced it is considering spinning off its Save-A-Lot grocery banner. Net earnings soared 42% to $61 million, from $43 million in the same quarter the prior fiscal year.

    Cost of sales rose at a slower pace than net sales, aiding profit growth. Net sales rose 3% to $5.41 billion, from $5.26 billion.
