  • Consumer electronics retailer to close all stores

    The going-out-of-business sales have started at Hhgregg.   The bankrupt retailer began liquidating its assets on Saturday, April 8, after failing to find a buyer. The chain said it expects to close all of its 220 stores by the end of May.  
  • Teens’ favorite apparel brand is…

    Athletic brands rule when it comes to teen preferences for apparel and footwear.   That’s according to Piper Jaffrey’s 33rd semi-annual Taking Stock With Teens research survey which details teen spending trends and brand preferences. Nike ranked as the top brand with teens, with a 31% share, up from 21% last year. Another athletic brand, Adidas, however, is the fastest growing brand in the survey across footwear & apparel.  
  • Kohl’s taps former Best Buy exec as chief marketer

    Kohl’s Cos. has a new chief marketer.   The retailer on Monday named former Best Buy marketing executive Greg Revelle as chief marketing officer. He will be responsible for Kohl’s marketing organization and overall marketing strategy, including its focus on driving customer engagement through analytics, enhancing the loyalty platform, accelerating customer traffic and continuing to build Kohl’s overall brand position. Revelle will report to Michelle Gass, chief merchandising and customer officer.  
  • Footwear retailer makes global debut with new flagship in Toronto

    Footaction opened the doors to its newest flagship store — its first outside of the United States.   The store, which is located in the Toronto Eaton Centre in Canada, features 6,500 square-feet of premium retail space. Presenting a unique layout, the new Footaction store is organized largely by brand, rather than by product category — a move that enhances the customer shopping experience.   
  • Former Hhgregg exec to head up operations for sporting goods retailer

    Academy Sports + Outdoors is bolstering its executive team.   The sporting good chain appointed Sam Johnson as its executive VP of retail operations, effective April 24. In his new role, Johnson will oversee the day-to-day operations of Academy's more than 225 stores, as well as lead the store support team.  
  • Electronics e-retailer offers post office deliveries in Canada

    Online shoppers are demanding more flexibility and control in their delivery experiences — and Newegg is responding.   The electronics e-retailer now enables its Canadian shoppers to ship purchases to more than 6,000 Canada Post retail post offices. Newegg created the program through a partnership with air freight shipping company Purolator International and Canada Post.   
  • Appliance, electronics retailer in deal with Aaron’s

    Conn’s has found a new third-party lease-to-own partner.   The retailer said it has formed a partnership with Progressive Leasing, a subsidiary of Aaron’s, to provide lease-to-own payment solutions to customers who do not qualify for Conn’s proprietary credit offering.   Conn’s has entered into an exclusive three-year agreement with Progressive Leasing to offer Conn’s customers Progressive’s lease-to-own program.  
  • Racine advances $16 million mall rescue plan

    Trusted national news sources such as the Wall Street Journal and New York Times continue to augur the fall the mall, but many American towns won’t give them up without a fight.   One such is Racine, Wisconsin, whose City Plan Commission advanced a scheme to revitalize the failing Regency Mall by forming a tax increment district (TID) around the 134-acre site that includes out-lots housing Target, Home Depot, Toys R Us, and the High Ridge Center.
