  • Gigante and Petco in deal to open stores in Mexico and Latin America

    New York -- Mexican supermarket and restaurant operator Gigante has entered into a joint venture with Petco Animal Supplies to open at least 50 stores in Mexico and other Latin American countries over seven years, Reuters reported.

    The first two Petco stores will open this year in Mexico City and Guadalajara, Gigante said in a release to the stock exchange.

    The financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

     

  • Report: Chicago-area shopping center development shows uptick

    Oakbrook Terrace, Ill. -- A Friday report by Mid-America Real Estate Corp. found that 2012 shopping center construction in the Chicagoland area grew 10% year-over-year, after a four-year decline.

    According to the 2012-2013 Chicagoland Shopping Center Report, square footage increased from 1.02 million sq. ft. of space in 2011 to 1.14 million sq. ft. – a difference of about 113,000 sq. ft.

    Footlocker COO Richard Johnson has joined the board of Maidenform Brands.

    Johnson serves as EVP and COO at Footlocker, one of the nation’s leading retailers of athletic footwear, and has been with the company for 16 years.

    "We are delighted to welcome Dick to our board of directors," said Maurice S. Reznik, Footlocker’s CEO. "Dick has demonstrated strong leadership at Foot Locker and his broad operating and international experience will serve Maidenform well."

  • Saks amps up omni-channel strategy

     

    Saks Fifth Avenue is amping up its omni-channel strategy by updating  its SaksFirst loyalty program and adding free shipping. The changes will make the benefits of the program more consistent across Saks’ different channels. 

    On Thursday, Saks announced that all Saks cardholders will now receive free shipping from Saks stores, Saks.com and Saks Fifth Avenue Off 5th stores.

  • Management shakeup at 99 Cents Only Stores; CEO out

    City of Commerce, Calif. -- The founding family of the 99 Cents Only Stores chain has been fired by its owners, with retail veteran Richard Anicetti and Michael Fung taking over top executive roles.

    The retailer said that Eric Schiffer (CEO), Jeff Gold (president) and Howard Gold (EVP) are “no longer employed by the company” and that Richard Anicetti has been named interim CEO. Schiffer is the son-in-law of founder David Gold while Jeff and Howard are his sons.
