  • Ikea on the move

    St. Louis -- Ikea is expanding in the Midwest.

    The chain will open a store in St. Louis on Sept. 30. It will be the Swedish company’s first store in Missouri, and 41st in the United States.  

    The 380,000-sq.-ft. St. Louis Ikea is being built on 21 acres along Interstate-64 at Vandeventer Avenue. It will house Missouri’s largest rooftop solar array, consistent with the Ikea renewable energy presence at 90% of its U.S. locations.

  • Jo-Ann Fabric in exec hiring, promotion

    Hudson, Ohio -- Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores announced a key hire in marketing, and a promotion in merchandising.

    Jo-Ann has hired Amy Parker as senior VP, marketing & advertising. Most recently, Amy was the chief marketing officer for Pet Supplies Plus and prior, chief marketing officer for the home division at Sears Holdings.

    Previously, she was with Michaels, Toys “R” Us, and several other multi-unit chains.

  • Bed Bath & Beyond misses Q1 profit, same-store sales

    Union, N.J. – Bed, Bath & Beyond Inc. missed Wall Street expectations for profit and same-store sales during a not-so-comfy first quarter of 2015. Net earnings dropped 18% to $158.5 million from $187.1 million, with increased selling, general and administrative (SG&A) and interest expenses offsetting higher gross profit.

    Net sales totaled $2.74 billion, an increase of 3% from $2.66 billion. Same-store sales increased by 2.2%, including the negative impact of Canadian currency fluctuation.

  • Ace is the place with the coolest hardware stores

    Home Depot and Lowe’s have nothing on four Ace Hardware operators who were recipients of the retail cooperative’s annual “Coolest Hardware Stores’” awards.

    The award is quite a distinction considering there are roughly 4,800 Ace Hardware stores worldwide. This year’s honorees included Henkle’s Ace Hardware (Webb City, Mo.), Islands Ace Hardware (Savannah, Ga.), Miner’s Ace Hardware (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) and Rocking R Ace Hardware (Harrisonburg, Va.).

  • Extreme-value retailer Ollie's files for IPO; sees potential for 950 stores

    HARRISBURG, Pa. — Extreme-value retailer Ollie’s Bargain Outlet Holdings on Monday filed for an initial public offering. With a tagline of "good stuff cheap,”  Ollie’s operates 181 stores in the Eastern United States, expects to open 25 to 30 stores in fiscal 2015 and sees the potential for more than 950 locations across the country.
