JD Sports is optimizing its enterprise to respond effectively to queries from artificial intelligence-based shopping agents.

The U.K.-based global sports footwear and fashion company, which operates over 2,500 stores in North America across five retail brands that include Finish Line, JD Sports, Shoe Palace and Hibbett, has deployed Algolia AI technology as the governed intelligence layer to build its agentic commerce strategy.

Since implementing Algolia in 2024, the retailer says it has increased revenue from search by 22%, lifted search click-through rates by 7.65%, increased product listing page (PLP) click-through rates by 73% and grown PLP revenue by 16%. Leveraging Algolia, JD Sports can answer conversational, intent-heavy queries in milliseconds with the same catalog and ranking logic the retailer users for its e-commerce sites.

In addition, dynamic re-ranking (DRR), which uses real-time click and conversion signals to identify trending products and automatically adjust their placement within set merchandising rules, delivered a 2.2% lift in click-through rate, a 4% lift in add-to-cart rate, and a 4% lift in conversion rate.

In partnership with Algolia Professional Services, JD Sports has moved to a microservices- and API-based e-commerce architecture based on independent, connected single-task programs and built a scalable search and data foundation designed around its ranking, merchandising, and customer experience requirements.

“Replacing a highly manual search and merchandising process with an AI-native foundation changed how we operate, just what our results look like,” said Kristin Matter, VP, digital operations at JD Sports. “We respond faster to changing shopper behavior and emerging trends, our merchandisers spend their time on strategy instead of tuning, and the revenue gains follow.”

JD Sports has also begun using AI to proactively surface emerging search trends, inventory shifts and merchandising opportunities, as well as tailor discovery to individual shopper intent. The same retrieval layer that serves the retailer’s websites now serves its AI agent, giving JD Sports a single platform to support shopper activity across channels.

In other AI optimization efforts, JD Sports has also integrated AI tools including Microsoft’s Copilot and Stripe, Google’s Gemini and OpenAI ChatGPT to create an AI foundation that merges search, discovery and integrated payments. This enables customers to find and purchase products in one step.

"JD Sports understood before most that discovery is a growth engine, not a website feature,” said Stephen Lynch, CEO, Algolia. “In a category where demand shifts weekly—winning takes intelligence merchandisers can inspect and control, not a black box they're asked to trust.”

Founded in 1981, JD Sports parent JD Group operates 4,811 stores across 36 countries under banners including JD, Size?, Courir, DTLR, Shoe Palace, Hibbett, Sprinter, Sport Zone, Cosmos and Go Outdoors.
