  • Sears selling more real estate than products

    Sears Holdings will eventually need to sell more stuff to shoppers to remain viable as a retailer, but in the meantime the company has shown itself to be more adept at generating cash through complex real estate deals that unlock the value of an increasingly less productive store base.

  • Sears, Simon Property form joint venture

    Hoffman Estates, Ill. – In its latest move to capitalize on the value of its real estate and raise more cash, Sears Holdings Corp. has formed a joint venture with Simon Property Group whereby Simon will take ownership of 10 Sears stores in Simon malls and lease them back to Sears, who will continue operating Sears stores in the venture. The stores include properties Sears has leased to other entities.

    Hoffman Estates, Ill. – Sears Holding Corp. is forming a real estate investment trust (REIT) called Seritage Growth Properties, which will purchase 254 Sears and Kmart stores for more than $2.5 billion. Seritage will partially fund the transaction through a public rights offering.

  • Sears aims to raise $2.5 with REIT

    Sears Holding Corp. is looking to raise more than $2.5 billion by selling its stores to a real estate investment trust.

    The REIT, called Seritage Growth Properties, will purchase 254 Sears and Kmart stores for more than $2.5 billion and then lease back the Sears and Kmart stores to Sears Holdings. Seritage will partially fund the transaction through a public rights offering.

  • Report: Maui Kmart store purchased for $20.8 million

    Hoffman Estates, Ill. – Hendricks Commercial Properties LLC, a Wisconsin-based real estate firm, has reportedly purchased the lone Kmart store on the Hawaiian island of Maui, for $20.8 million. According to Pacific Business News, the 108,000-sq.-ft. building is part of a seven-acre parcel that had been on the market for $22.5 million.

    Hendricks purchased the store from KM Maui Partners, who had been leasing the store back to Kmart.
     

  • Sears thinks ‘dirty’ to drive brand growth

    Sears has teamed up with organizers of a next-generation athletic event that involves slogging through mud to promote its best-selling Kenmore brand in stores, online and via social media.

    The Kenmore brand announced that for the second consecutive year, it will be the official household appliance sponsor of the Dity Girl Mud Run, the original women-only national 5K obstacle and race event.

  • Land’s End flounders after Sears split

    Separating itself from Sears Holdings a year ago has not helped Land’s End financial footing judging from the company’s fourth quarter profit and same store sales decline.

    Land’s End sales declined 4.9% to $504.6 million and net income declined 28% to $33.1 million in the fourth quarter ended Jan. 30. Merchandise sales and services were negatively impacted by a $3.4 million product recall in the quarter that negatively impacted net income by $2.6 million.

    Staten Island Mall announced that the 1.2-million-sq.-ft. property will undergo a much anticipated multi-million dollar redevelopment that will add interior and exterior upgrades, new fashion retailers, restaurants, a Fairway Market and public piazza for guests to gather and enjoy events year-round, including a farmers market, holiday festivities, fashion shows and community fundraisers.

    Enhancements also include the ability for Macy’s to expand.
