  • Now Trending: Reflecting on Macy’s store closures

    When Macy’s announced in early September that it planned to close between 35 and 40 underperforming stores, the move certainly made headlines. Unfortunately for Macy’s, it also made sense. Because, as most analysts and industry observers can attest, it only reaffirmed a storyline that has been developing for many years now: department stores are in trouble.

  • Nordstrom Rack to relocate to expanded Serramonte Center

    Nordstrom plans to relocate its Nordstrom Rack store from 280 Metro Center to the redeveloped Serramonte Center in Daly City, California.

    The approximately 40,000-sq.ft. store is scheduled to open in fall 2017. The redeveloped property is owned by Equity One.

    Nordstrom will join fellow anchors Target, JC Penney, Macy's and Dick's Sporting Goods. The new location is just across Highway 280 from the current Nordstrom Rack.

  • Report: Tour Nordstrom’s newest store

    Nordstrom will debut several new features when it opens on October 2 in Minnetonka, Minn., including “girlfriend” fitting rooms, which offer more space so that friends can try items on in the same room, and a beauty format that allows customers to select items from store shelves themselves, reports the Minneapolis/St.Paul Business Jounal.

    The 230,000-sq.-ft. flagship store offers a curated selection of merchandise from accessible to luxury price points.

    Seattle -- Finally some good news in the department store sector.

    Nordstrom Inc. on Thursday reported better-than-expected fiscal second-quarter earnings and sales.

    The retailer reported net profit of $211 million, or $1.09 a share, for the quarter ending Aug. 1, up from $183 million, or 95 cents a share, in the year-ago period.

  • Nordstrom avoids the department store doldrums

    In a week in which many of the nation's major department stores reported disappointing financial results, Nordstrom showed once again how to drive sales growth.

    The Washington-based retailer reported that total sales rose 9.2% from the same quarter in 2014, while same store sales rose 4.9%. The company posted a profit of $211 million, or $1.09 a share, compared with $183 million, or 95 cents a share, a year earlier. Revenue, which includes revenue from its credit cards, rose 9% to $3.7 billion.
