  • Eyeglass retail giant in $49 billion merger

    Luxottica Group, the leading eyeglass retailer with multiple U.S. store banners, has entered into a deal that would create a global giant in the optical industry.   Luxottica, whose brands include LensCrafters, Sunglass Hut, Oliver Peoples, and Pearle Vision, will merge with lens-maker Essilor International of France in a deal valued at $49 billion. The merger brings together the industry’s largest manufacturer with its leading retailer.    
  • Report: Consumers say goodbye to Google Glass

    Retailers have one less form factor to consider in their wearable connected device strategies. According to Gizmodo, Google is officially ending all support for its Google Glass connected eyewear device in the consumer market. This ends plans to relaunch Google Glass among consumers in partnership with Luxottica Group that were announced in April 2015, although Google is still promoting Google Glass as a workplace tool.   • Macy’s to test new hybrid store format; grow specialty stores

    Macy’s may be cutting back on the number of department stores in its portfolio, but the company is moving ahead with brick-and-mortar growth in other areas.

    Over the next two years, Macy’s plans to open about 50 Macy’s Backstage stores in off-mall locations. The roll out builds on the launch of the off-price format this past September.
