  • Kohl's to increase holiday hiring by 5%

    Menomonee Falls, Wis. — Kohl’s Corp. said Tuesday it will hire 40,000 seasonal workers for the 2011 holiday shopping period, about 5% more than in 2010.

    The plan equates to about 35 additional associates per store at its 1,127 stores, each working about 20 hours per week.

    In addition, Kohl's said it plans to hire 2,500 seasonal workers at DCs and 500 seasonal and full-time credit operations workers.

    Atlanta -- U.S. prosecutors have charged former Carter’s senior VP Joseph Elles with securities fraud, according to a report by the Associated Press.

    Elles has been accused of lying about the company's financial situation and then selling shares of its stock when the price was artificially inflated.

  • Gordman’s names VP stores

    Omaha, Neb. -- Apparel and home fashions retailer Gordman’s has named Andy Lundquist  as VP stores.

    Lundquist most recently served as senior VP stores for Kohl’s Department Stores, where oversaw 270 stores generating $4 billion in revenues in 21 states.

    New York City -- While it may take some to fully assess the damage, the impact of Hurricane Irene on retail sales is likely to split among retail sectors: Home-improvement stores selling emergency preparation products and clean-up items are likely to benefit the most from the storm, while apparel retailers and department stores selling non-essential items are likely to take a hit.

  • Kohl's Q2 profit up 17%, on track to open 31 stores

    Menomonee Falls, Wis. -- Kohl's Corp. reported Thursday that profit for the quarter ended July 30 rose 17% to $303 million, compared with $260 million in the year-ago period. The retailer cited tightened cost controls and success of store-label brands for the improved performance, and has raised its full-year guidance.

    Kohl’s said it is on track to open an additional 31 stores this year, as well as remodel another 15 stores next month. The company opened nine and remodeled 85 stores in the first half of the year.
