  • Management shakeup at DDR; August is named CEO

    DDR fired president and CEO David Oakes and replaced him with 40-year industry veteran Thomas August. A company press release says Oakes’ termination was unrelated to financial or operating results, though DDR showed a net loss of $93.5 million in 2015 after posting income of $91.3 million the previous year.  

  • Dick’s Sporting Goods wins bidding war

    Dick’s Sporting Goods was the victor on Thursday at the bankruptcy auction for former rival Sports Authority Holdings.    Dick’s bid $15 million for the brand name and other intellectual property, beating British-based Sports Direct International PLC’s $13 million bid, according to the Wall Street Journal.      Dick’s also had the winning bid at the auction for 31 Sports Authority store leases, for an additional $8 million, the report said.  

  • Delray Beach shopping center sells for $33 million

    New Century Commons, a shopping center in Delray Beach, Florida, has been purchased by Menin Development for $33 million, according to a report in the Sun Sentinel.

    Seller of the 84,551-sq.-ft. center was Linton 510 LLC, which faced uncertainty over the future of one of its anchors, Sports Authority, which filed for bankruptcy in March. Questions about cash flow going forward complicated the closing of the sale, though a Menin spokesman told the South Florida newspaper that several retailers have inquired about the Sports Authority space.

  • Under Armour dives deep into personalization

    Under Armour is looking to elevate the shopping experience with unique fitness data.

    The retailer has launched UA Shop, a mobile shopping app built on the Under Armour Connected Fitness platform. Integrating data from the company’s proprietary digital fitness community allows UA Shop to provide a deeply personalized experience based on athlete inspiration, workout history and previous purchase history.

    Schimenti Construction has begun work on Dick's Sporting Goods' store in Melville, New York, managing an open store remodel/tenant fit-out of the approximately 95,000-sq.-ft. space.

  • Sports Authority to liquidate

    It’s closing time for Sports Authority, which is giving up on reorganization.

    An attorney for the sporting goods retailer told the judge in bankruptcy court on Tuesday that the company is no longer pursuing reorganization and exiting Chapter 11. Instead, it will look for buyers to purchase some or all of its remaining stores.

    “It has become apparent that the debtors will not reorganize under a plan but instead will pursue a sale,” company attorney Robert Klyman said in court.

  • Macy’s unseats Kohl’s as ….

    Macy’s ranked as the department store of the year in the Harris Poll’s 28th annual EquiTrend Study, which recognizes the strongest brands based on consumer response.

    In coming out on top, Macy's unseated Kohl's, which has held the honor since 2012. Macy's also showed one of the largest brand equity increases (+7%) over a three-year period.
