  • Walmart increased promotional activity in February

    As Walmart CFO Charles Holley noted recently during an investor conference, the company was pleased with its February sales. Unseasonably warm weather surely played a role as did a surge in promotional activity which seems oddly inconsistent with the company’s renewed emphasis every day low prices. The number of ad pages increased 58% to 41 total pages compared to 26 the prior year, according to promotional research firm Market Track.

  • Ross reports 19% rise in Q4 profit after strong holiday selling season

    Pleasanton, Calif. -- Ross Stores Inc. reported Thursday that profit for the quarter ended Jan. 28 rose 19% to $192 million, from $161.8 million last year. A profitable holiday season helped boost the discounter’s results, which met Wall Street expectations.

    Sales surged almost 12% to $2.4 billion, and same-store sales increased 7%.

    For the full year, Ross reported a net income rise of 18% to $657.2 million. Sales increased 9% to $8.6 billion, with same-store sales up 5%.

  • Mild weather helps sustain retail growth in February

    WASHINGTON — February retail sales rose 8.6% over last year, marking 20 consecutive months of sustained growth, The National Retail Federation reported Tuesday.

    The seasonally adjusted increase -- stronger than expected -- was 0.5%, which excludes automobiles, gas stations and restaurants.

  • Applebee’s and Transaction Wireless team for Facebook app

    Las Vegas -- Digital gift card solution-provider Transaction Wireless said Tuesday that Applebee’s expanded its offering with the Transaction Wireless platform to provide its sports fans with personalized digital gift cards as part of its “Catch the Game” invite application on Facebook.

    The app is timed to launch in concert with the March Madness NCAA basketball series. Basketball fans visit the Applebee’s Facebook page and schedule a viewing party at any Applebee's location to invite family and friends to attend.

    Well, 2012 is certainly off to a wild start.     BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Sam's Club is stepping up its efforts to fight hunger by joining with with two Nashville recording stars, General Mills, key food suppliers and the nation's largest domestic hunger-relief charity, Feeding America, in a nationwide program to help Feeding America secure up to one million meals for local food banks to fulfill critical springtime shortages.

    Overall, February witnessed a year-over-year decline in total flyer circulation per market as well as pages per market. Conversely, the biggest change in this month was witnessed by Walmart, which saw a considerable jump in flyer circulation as well as the number of pages. This dramatic increase of 122% increase in flyer drop was mainly due to the two extra flyers dropped in the second and fourth week of February this year unlike the previous year.

  • Hibbett Sports profit leaps 27% in Q4, to open 40 net new stores

    Birmingham, Ala. -- Hibbett Sports Inc. reported Friday that profit for the quarter ended Jan. 28 jumped 27% to $15.8 million, compared with $12.5 million in the year-ago period.
     
    Revenue increased 10% to $190.7 million from $173.2 million, missing Wall Street’s expected $192.2 million in revenue. Same-store sales rose 7.2%.

    For the full year, Hibbett reported net income of $59.1 million, up from $46.4 million last year. Revenue rose to $732.6 million, from $665 million.
