  • Lowe’s reports sales, earnings gains on warmer weather

    New York -- Lowe’s reported net earnings of $527 million for the quarter ended May 4, a 14.3% increase over the same period a year ago.

    Sales for the quarter increased 7.9% to $13.2 billion, from $12.2 billion in the first quarter of 2011.

    Comparable-store sales for the quarter increased 2.6%, while comparable-store sales for the U.S. business increased 2.7%.

  • Target Q1 beats estimates, raises forecast

    Minneapolis -- Target Corp. reported a better-than-expected 1.2% increase in first-quarter profit as warm weather and an early Easter helped drive sales. The chain also raised its earnings forecast for the full year.

    Target’s net earnings for the quarter ended April 28 were $697 million, compared with $689 million in the year-ago period.

    “We’re very pleased with our first-quarter earnings, which benefited from better-than-expected sales,” Gregg Steinhafel, Target’s CEO, said in a statement.

    When Children’s Wish Foundation International, an Atlanta-based charity, hosts scrapbooking or craft parties for children in the hospital, it turns to a gifts-in-kind organization and its catalog of donated merchandise for supplies. The two organizations then coordinate shipments of stuffed animals, Halloween costumes, craft materials, toys, videos and other items to hospitals to help fulfill the wishes of children in need.

    Charleston, S.C. -- The number of Americans delaying their shopping to Memorial Day Weekend is at an all-time high, according to findings in two reports by America's Research Group Surveys. The reports find that shoppers will approach Memorial Day in keeping with a growing trend: holding off on shopping until "big" holiday weekends.

  • CBL, Horizon break ground on second phase of Outlet Shoppes at Oklahoma City

    Chattanooga, Tenn. -- CBL & Associates Properties and Horizon Group Properties said Tuesday that construction will begin immediately on the second phase of The Outlet Shoppes at Oklahoma City.

    The 28,000-sq.-ft. expansion is scheduled to open in November and will bring Columbia Sports, Ann Taylor Loft, Waterford, Kenneth Cole, Lucky Brand and more to the center.
