  • Bon-Ton posts 5.3% rise in sales; CFO to exit

    Holiday discounts helped Bon-Ton Stores post a robust increase in same-store sales.

    The company said same-store sales for the nine-week holiday period ended Jan. 3 increased 5.3%. Total sales for the combined months of November and December were up 3.8%, the company said.

    Kathryn Bufano, president and CEO, said the company was “pleased” with the numbers, but that a “highly promotional sales environment” tempered the impact of those improved sales on Bon-Ton’s profits.

  • Holiday sales up 1.5% at Michael's

    Michaels Companies Inc. had plenty to smile about during the 2014 holiday season -- its first holiday season since going public in June.

    Net sales for the eleven-week period from Nov. 2 to Jan. 17 increased 3.5% and same-store sales increased 1.5% from the comparable prior year period. For the full fourth quarter of fiscal 2014, net sales are expected to be in the range of about $1.59 billion to $1.6 billion, with an expected increase in same-store sales ranging from 0.8% to 1.2%. Michaels expects operating income to be $286 million to $291 million.

  • Michaels holiday sales grow 3.5%

    Irving, Texas – The Michaels Companies Inc. had plenty to smile about during the 2014 holiday season. Net sales for the eleven-week period from Nov. 2, 2014 to Jan. 17, 2015 increased 3.5% and same-store sales increased 1.5% from the comparable prior year period.

    For the full fourth quarter of fiscal 2014, net sales are expected to be in the range of about $1.59 billion to $1.6 billion, with an expected increase in same-store sales ranging from 0.8% to 1.2%.
     

  • Walmart launches in-store tax refunds in cash

    Walmart is hoping to increase the cash in in-store shoppers’ wallets this year by offering a new tax refund service.

    Direct2Cash is a way for customers to collect their tax refunds in cash at stores this tax season. The service is an alternative for taxpayers who otherwise might get refunds via check or direct deposit.

  • Billing plans lift Best Buy sales 3.4%

    Solid sales of televisions and mobile phones in stores and online drove better than expected top line growth at Best Buy during the holidays with details on profitability yet to come.

    The company said same-store sales grew 3.4% in the United States over the holidays (Nov.-Dec.) as it sold more large-screen TVs and mobile phones.

  • Toys 'R' Us, Ikea raise nearly $20M for kids

    Holiday sales in 2014 were strong, and enthusiastic shoppers helped Toys “R” Us and Ikea raise nearly $20 million for children's charities.

    The Toys “R” Us annual fundraising campaign to benefit the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation was its most successful to date, raising $6.4 million and collecting more than 220,000 toys.

  • Best Buy reports solid holiday but expects soft FY16 sales

    Minneapolis – Best Buy Co. Inc. had a happy holiday season, but the New Year is not looking so bright. The retailer is predicting flat to negative enterprise same-store sales during the first half of fiscal 2016.

    Best Buy is basing this prediction on external pressures such as declining consumer excitement about high-profile products that sold well during the holidays, deflationary pricing and declining purchases of extended warranties.

  • Target’s U.S. business exceeds expectations

    Overshadowed by Target’s bombshell announcement to exit Canada, the retailer said U.S. sales – and profits – were much better than expected during the holidays.

    The favorable combination of increased traffic and stronger than expected digital sales enabled the company to produce a 3% same store sales increase during November and December versus an earlier forecast which called for 2% growth.
