  • More consumers plan to boycott Black Friday

    More consumers plan to shop on Cyber Monday than on Black Friday, according to a recent Morpace Omnibus report.

    Holiday intentions for U.S. consumers were revealed when the Omnibus data showed that out of 1,001 individuals surveyed, more than 57% plan to shop on Cyber Monday this year, compared to only 35% planning to shop on Black Friday. And of those planning to shop on Black Friday, only 23% will be strictly going to retail locations while another 55% will be shopping both in-store and online.

  • Lands' End goes omnichannel for the holidays

    Lands' End is getting into the brick-and-mortar business just in time for the busiest shopping season of the year.

    The online retailer plans to open two holiday pop-up shops, one in New York and one in Boston.

  • Belk engages customers for holidays

    Regional department store retailer Belk Inc. is using social media to make the holidays a little more fun and rewarding for its shoppers.

    North Carolina-based Belk, which operates about 300 stores, has teamed up with digital marketing solutions provider HelloWorld for the return of the Santa Baby sweepstakes, now in its second year. In an effort to increase mobile opt-ins and ultimately boost brand awareness and consumer engagement, Belk and HelloWorld are allowing customers to create personalized e-cards, gifs, and TV spots.

    A new holiday shopping survey reveals major disruptions in holiday shopping traditions, largely due to digital engagement.

    Deloitte’s 30th annual holiday survey of consumer spending intentions and trends finds that some shopping traditions are losing their luster.

    Key findings from the survey of more than 4,000 U.S. consumers include:

  • No sales, no crowds, no Black Friday at REI

    REI has shocked the retail industry — and shoppers — with its decision to lock its doors on one of the biggest and most profitable shopping days of the year.

    The retailer says it will be closed not only on Thanksgiving Day but also on Black Friday. REI.com will operate as normal on Thanksgiving. On Black Friday, REI.com will have a black takeover screen encouraging people to get outside. Customers will still be able to view product and make a purchase on Black Friday, but the order will not be processed until Saturday.

  • Apple eases retail app access

    Consumers will be able to more easily find and download retail e-commerce apps from the Apple App Store just as the holiday shopping season heats up.

    Apple will launch a new category called “Shopping” on the App Store on Nov. 5. The category will include e-commerce apps from retailers such as Amazon, Walmart, Target and eBay. Also included will be apps from digital coupon and deal providers such as RetailMeNot and Groupon, as well as price comparison apps such as ShopSavvy.

  • 15th annual CGP forecast predicts 3.2% holiday growth

    U.S. consumers will generate only a lackluster 3.2% year-over-year increase in holiday sales, according to the latest forecast of November-December spending.

    Customer Growth Partners’ 15th Annual Holiday Forecast says retail sales for the holiday period will reach $607 billion, a new record, but the anemic 3.2% pace reflects declining median incomes for all but the top 20% of households.
