  • Whole Foods gets whole picture of its business

    Whole Foods Market, Inc. is teaming up with a well-known analytics provider to obtain a deeper understanding of its assortment and customer base.   The specialty grocery chain has selected Nielsen as its primary U.S. analytics provider for POS data, consumer insights and industry metrics. Nielsen is working with the company to collaboratively create a customized natural and organic product hierarchy that will provide a comprehensive view of Whole Foods Market's product categories, including ingredient-level attributes.

    Consumers are taking stock of their financial health and how it will affect their decisions to make CPG purchases in the coming months.

    According to the new first quarter 2016 IRI Consumer Connect survey, 67% of respondents feel their financial health will improve in the next six months. As a result, CPG spending will generally improve, but shoppers have some specific needs and wants to fulfill.

  • JCPenney aims new private brand, store concept at plus-size millennial women

    Hot on the heels of its launch of a private label collection aimed at millennial women, The J.C. Penney Co. is now introducing a brand and store section designed for a subset of that market.

    JCPenney is debuting Boutique+, a plus-size fashion brand designed for full-figured millennial women. Boutique+ will be available at 500 stores and online May 1.

    Market Track compared retail circular advertising in March 2016 vs. March 2015 and noted trends occurring across top retail chains.

    Lowe’s Home Improvement had denser March print circulars with twice the ads per page and nearly 80 additional ads per drop. Lowe’s shifted the Spring Black Friday sale to the 3/31 drop; up from first week of May 2015.

    Home depot did not counter this shift through print, but promoted Spring Black Friday on their website.

  • Sports Authority gets customers moving

    Sports Authority wants to help customers stay healthy, wherever they are.

    The full-line sporting goods retailer has launched its new BodyFit Personal Training app. This free app gives customers exclusive access to more than 100 fitness training videos and provides guidance on how to use Sports Authority’s proprietary BodyFit sports and exercise equipment.

  • Dick's Sporting Goods taps marketing head to head up new store format

    Lauren Hobart has been elevated to the role of executive VP at Dick’s Sporting Goods and given responsibility for a potential new growth vehicle. Hobart was named executive VP, CMO and general manager of Dick’s new women’s specialty fitness store format, which is branded as Chelsea Collective. Only two store are in operation currently, in McLean, Virginia. and Pittsburgh, but greater growth could be in store now that Dick’s has given a senior executive oversight of the concept.
