  • Jobless claims hit three-month low

    Washington, D.C. -- A report released Thursday by the Labor Department said that jobless claims for last week dropped by 24,000 to 398,000, the fewest since April.

    Initial claims from two weeks ago were revised up to 422,000 from an original reading of 418,000. Economists surveyed by MarketWatch had expected new requests for jobless benefits to fall to 413,000 in the latest week.

  • FMI names Heather Garlich director of media, public relations

    ARLINGTON, Va. — The Food Marketing Institute on Wednesday named Heather Garlich as the association’s director of media and public relations. She will be responsible for managing communications outreach and information activities related to FMI’s strategic goals, including government relations, food safety, conferences and events, and industry relations.

  • NewPark Mall opens Cultural Arts Center

    Newark, Calif. -- NewPark Mall, in Newark, Calif., has opened an in-house cultural arts center, the NewPark Mall Cultural Corner.

    The just-opened cultural center, located on the lower level near Sears, provides exhibit space for the work of local artisans, including painters, sculptors, photographers and digital artists.

    NewPark Mall is anchored by Macy's, Sears, J.C. Penney, Target and Burlington Coat Factory. It is owned and managed by General Growth Properties, Chicago.

  • Wal-Mart Founders Charity donates $50 million to Teach for America

    Bentonville, Ark. -- The Walton Family Foundation revealed Wednesday that it will donate $50 million to Teach For America, a commitment that stands to nearly double the size of the organization’s teaching ranks.

    The charity that was created by the founder of Wal-Mart Stores will mete out half of the funds over a three-year period, and will increase the number of teachers to 15,000 by 2015. The remaining half of the donation will support the training of existing Teach for America instructors in seven communities.

  • Educator acknowledged for excellence in supply chain and logistics

    In recognition of his significant contributions to the art and science of supply chain and logistics management, Dr. James R. Stock will receive Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals’ (CSCMP) 2011 Distinguished Service Award.

    Stock serves as the Frank Harvey Endowed Professor of Marketing at the University of South Florida and becomes the 46th person to receive the annual award since it was created in 1965. He will be honored during the opening general session on Monday, Oct. 3, at CSCMP’s Annual Global Conference in Philadelphia.
