  • Walmart’s digital blueprint revealed in UK

    Walmart unveiled new details regarding the digital strategy for its Asda division in the United Kingdom that could have implications for how the retailer serves the U.S. market.

    U.K. shoppers love the internet and Walmart’s Asda unit is responding with growth of order online, pick up in store capabilities known as Click and Collect, dedicated facilities and the consolidation of Web sites.

  • Kroger raises full-year guidance

    Kroger reported total sales of $25.3 billion, representing an increase of 11.6% for its second quarter. Total sales, excluding fuel, increased 12.4% in the second quarter over the same period last year.

  • Overstock’s international customers can now pay with Bitcoin

    Overstock has updated its checkout system for international customers so they can pay with Bitcoin. Early this year, Overstock became one of the first online shopping sites to accept the cryptocurrency.

  • PepsiCo and GLAAD battle bullying with 'Purple On!' campaign

    PepsiCo announced its "Purple On!" campaign against bullying. The initiative supports GLAAD's annual Spirit Day, which takes place on Oct. 16. Spirit Day inspires citizens to wear purple to show their stance against bullying, and also to show support for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth.

  • Five Below profit doubles in second quarter

    Five Below’s profit more than doubled to $8.3 million in the second quarter of fiscal 2014, from $4.1 million in the same period last year. Its results beat expectations. The chain issued a third-quarter earnings estimate slightly below Wall Street views, while increasing its full-year sales and earnings guidance.

    Revenue in the quarter increased 30% to $152.5 million. Same-store sales increased by 3.2%.

  • RILA taps new VP of privacy and cyber security

    Nicholas Ahrens will join the Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA) as VP of privacy and cyber security. Joining the association from the Office of the General Counsel at the U.S. Department of Commerce, Ahrens will lead RILA’s privacy and data security agenda and serve as the lead advocate to the government on cyber security, privacy, data security and related issues.

  • New CFO at Hhgregg

    Hhgregg has added Robert J. Riesbeck to its executive team as CFO, as part of the retailer’s continued focus on transforming the business.

    Riesbeck has more than 25 years of experience in financial and operations management. Most recently, he served as operations executive/group CFO at Sun Capital Partners where he was responsible for financial and operations oversight of a diverse group of portfolio companies with combined revenues exceeding $5 billion.

  • Vitamin Shoppe seeks CEO

    The Vitamin Shoppe’s CEO Tony Truesdale plans to retire June 27, 2015, to spend more time with his family and his external board work.  

    The board will start searching for a new CEO, who will be charged with implementing the next stages of the company's long-term growth plans. It will be considering internal and external candidates.

  • Men’s Wearhouse Q2 profit hit by Jos. A. Bank acquisition

    Non-deductible costs related to the purchase of Jos. A. Bank helped sharply reduce net earnings at The Men’s Wearhouse during the second quarter of fiscal 2014.

    The Men’s Wearhouse reported net earnings of $12.3 million, down 71% from $42.9 million the same period a year earlier, although the total still beat Wall Street projections.
