  • Faked Brand Social Media Profiles Send Massively Antisocial Holiday Message

    One of many things that reaches a frenetic pace during the holiday season is social media activity, with brands ramping up promotions, suggestions and other communication to their followers. Aside from the fact that 23% of the world’s population — yes, 1.7 billion people — visit their Facebook profiles every month, the brands with the best social media presence are reaching upward of 40 million consumers.   
  • Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz stepping down; will hand reins to company COO

    Howard Schultz is leaving his post as CEO of the company he built into a global coffee empire, but he’s not retiring.   Schultz will step down as CEO of Starbucks Corp. on April 3, at which time he will be appointed executive chairman and shift his focus to the company’s new upscale initiatives — the design and development of Starbucks Reserve Roasteries around the world and the expansion of the Starbucks Reserve retail store format — along with its social impact programs.     
  • Unusual demographic flocking to J.C. Penney

    J.C. Penney is often associated with an older shopper demographic. But its comeback is being fueled, at least partially, by a surprising group.    Millennial moms now account for 45% of Penney's revenue, CNBC reported, and the group is also driving much of the growth in the company's sales and customer count.   
  • Food-stamp cuts contribute to Dollar General’s woes in Q3

    Reductions in food-stamp benefits and falling grocery prices took a toll on Dollar General Corp.’s third-quarter performance which came in below expectations and included an unexpected drop in same-store sales.   The company reported a profit of $235 million, or $0.84 per diluted share, in the quarter, compared to net income of $253 million, or $0.86 per diluted share, in the year ago period. Its profit included a charge of about 5 cents per share for store relocation costs and disaster-related expenses.  
  • CSA Exclusive: America’s Top 10 Redevelopers

    Kimco Realty Corp. takes the top spot in Chain Store Age’s 12th annual Top Redevelopers survey, with 2,669,999 sq. ft. redeveloped. Kimco’s redevelopment reach in 2015-2016 spanned 19 states and Canada, as the company touched 39 projects in all. (The survey analyzed redevelopment work from mid-year to mid-year in the 12-month period from June 2015 to June 2016.)
  • Amazon rolls out a truck for shipping data

    It’s not a joke.   Amazon Web Services has announced a new service, called AWS Snowmobile, designed to physically get all of the data stored in a company's massive data center into Amazon's cloud, Business Insider reported.     
  • U.K. fast-fashion e-tailer interested in acquiring Nasty Gal

    Boohoo, a fast-fashion online retailer based in Manchester, England, is reportedly bidding for bankrupt U.S. retailer Nasty Gal.    Boohoo has filed a petition to incorporate Nasty Gal as part of its business in the United Kingdom, registering the business Nasty Gal Ltd with Companies House, fashionunited.com reported.  
  • Furniture retailer to bolster shopping experience with virtual reality

    Ashley Furniture is jumping into virtual and augmented reality to help shoppers visualize how furnishings can fit into a space more accurately.    The retailer is launching a company-wide virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) initiative that is designed to enable consumers to create interior layouts and experience living spaces in 3D. Ashley Furniture will create and scale its product catalogue for AR and VR, and publish new 3D product experiences, with a platform from augmented reality and virtual reality provider Marxent.
