  • 99 Cents Only reports Q1 sales growth.

    COMMERCE, Calif. — 99 Cents Only Stores reported total sales of $368.3 million for the first quarter of fiscal 2012 ended July 2.  This represents an increase of 6.3% over total sales of $346.5 million for the same quarter last year.  

  • CBL announces anchor redevelopments, expansion at Monroeville Mall

    Monroeville, Pa. — Chattanooga, Tenn.-based CBL & Associates Properties Inc. has announced a series of anchor redevelopments at Monroeville Mall in Monroeville, Pa., including the relocation of J.C. Penney to a new 110,000-sq.-ft. store on the upper level of the former Boscov’s location.     

    Additionally, the current J.C. Penney location will be redeveloped into a new state-of-the-art 12-screen Cinemark Theatre.

    New York — Five Below on Friday made its Michigan debut, opening five stores in the Detroit metro area. The chain specializes in “extreme value” merchandise for teens and pre-teens, with no item priced more than $5.

    CARLISLE, Pa . — The U.S. subsidiary of Dutch supermarket operator Royal Ahold is hoping to attract local and diverse suppliers to its stores in the markets in which it operates.

  • South African suppliers gain new ally

    Small suppliers looking to establish business relationships with Massmart following Walmart’s acquisition of a controlling stake in the company would be well served to learn the correct pronunciation of Mncane Mthunzi.

    Mthunzi will fill a new supplier development role at Massmart and comes to the retailer from an organization known as the Consumer Goods Council of South Africa where he served as CEO and Massmart CEO Grant Pattison serves as chairman.

  • Is Walmart losing its pricing edge?

    That was the provocative, if somewhat dated, question Smart Money used as a headline on a story this week based on a consumer survey conducted by Morgan Stanley analyst Mark Wiltamuth. He initiated coverage of Walmart with an ambiguous “equal weight” rating and was quoted as saying, “Many consumers no longer think Walmart has the lowest prices.”

  • Alliance Data signs long-term renewal agreement with The RoomPlace

    Dallas< — Alliance Data Systems Corporation  announced it has signed a long-term renewal agreement to continue providing private label credit card services for The RoomPlace.

    Under terms of the agreement, Alliance Data will continue providing The RoomPlace with private label credit card services, including account acquisition and activation; receivables funding; card authorization; private label credit card issuance; statement generation; remittance processing; customer service functions; and marketing services.
