  • Genesco acquires Canadian footwear chain

    Genesco is expanding its reach geographically and generationally with its latest acquisition.

    The company has entered into an agreement with the Aldo Group Inc. to acquire the 37-store Little Burgundy retail footwear chain in Canada.

  • PwC: Retail mergers & acquisition activity hits $1 billion

    Mega deals worth more than $1 billion drove the U.S. retail and consumer sector’s strong third quarter, according to PwC’s U.S. quarterly R&C Deals Insights report.

    During the three-month period ending Sept. 30, 36 deals valued over $50 million were announced for the sector, with deal value up 64% in the third quarter, accounting for $46.6 billion, compared to $28.4 billion in the second quarter. Deal volume went up 6% from the second quarter, but down 36% from third quarter 2014.

  • Whole Foods Market adds Target omnichannel guru to exec ranks

    Whole Foods Market is adding a Target veteran with experience in technology and omnichannel marketing to its executive leadership team.

    The grocery retailer announced that it has named Don J. Clark global VP of purchasing for non-perishables.

    “He is a proven leader in the retail industry with a clear track record of delivering results. His core values align very well with our company’s, and we are confident that Don will execute a range of innovative strategies that help take our non-perishables business to the next level.”

  • Costco adds more digital expertise to board

    For the second time in less than a month, Costco has elected a veteran of the telecommunications industry to serve on the retailer's board of directors.

    Costco announced that John W. Stanton, chairman of Trilogy International Partners, Inc., and Trilogy Equity Partners, has been elected to Costco's board. Stanton founded and served as chairman and CEO of Western Wireless Corporation, a wireless telecommunications company, from 1992 until shortly after its acquisition by ALLTEL Corporation in 2005.

  • Target aims for a seamless holiday season

    Target has an aggressive new plan to lure shoppers this holiday season that includes free shipping on all orders and a new international website.

    The plan is part of Target CEO Brian Cornell’s efforts to restructure the company and revamp its digital and in-store offerings. Free shipping starts Nov. 1 and ends Dec. 25.

  • Report: Target tests global digital waters

    Target Corp. may have shuttered its Canadian stores, but that doesn’t mean the discounter is done with global retailing.

    According to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, Target has expanded a 2014 pilot program that made about 200,000 items available to U.K. customers via eBay to 64 countries. Target is also partnering with international shipping logistics firm Borderfree in a test of a new global e-commerce site, intl.target.com.

  • For Walgreens CEO, Rite Aid deal may not be his last

    In the wake of the news that Walgreens Boots Alliance would be acquiring Rite Aid, Walgreens CEO Stefano Pessina told the New York Times that he is open to opportunities that would expand the company’s footprint around the globe.“Due to my age, I won’t have a possibility to make many more acquisitions,” Pessina told the Times. “And unfortunately, I cannot amuse myself dealing directly with small acquisitions, and dealing directly with owners and so on. ...

    German discount grocery chain Lidl has broken ground for a new regional U.S. headquarters and distribution center in Spotsylvania County, Virginia.

  • Walmart, Michael's vet takes top spot at women's apparel chain

    It's changing of the guard time at Chico's FAS.

    After what it called an extensive search, the retailer named industry veteran Shelley Broader as president and CEO, effective Dec. 1. She succeeds David F. Dyer, who will become vice chair of the Chico's board.

    Broader brings over 25 years of experience to her new position. Most recently, she served as president and CEO of Walmart's EMEA region, responsible for retail operations and business development across Europe, the Middle East, Sub-Sahara Africa and Canada.
