  • CSA Exclusive: America’s Top 10 Redevelopers

    Kimco Realty Corp. takes the top spot in Chain Store Age’s 12th annual Top Redevelopers survey, with 2,669,999 sq. ft. redeveloped. Kimco’s redevelopment reach in 2015-2016 spanned 19 states and Canada, as the company touched 39 projects in all.   (The survey analyzed redevelopment work from mid-year to mid-year in the 12-month period from June 2015 to June 2016.)       Vestar claimed the #2 spot, with 1,930,000 sq. ft. developed, followed by Westfield, with 1, 743 sq. ft. 
  • Canada Goose, New York City

    Canadian outerwear brand Canada Goose, best known for its signature goose-down jacket with fur-trimmed hood, has opened its first-ever U.S. store.   The 4,100-sq.-ft. space is designed to reflect the company’s roots and Arctic heritage. The works of Canadian artisans are showcased throughout the store, which also features gallery-styled displays of vintage pieces from the brand’s archives and a 3,840-pound marble cash-wrap, carved from a single piece of rock and sourced from a quarry in British Columbia.   
  • Gap underwhelms as Q3 profit, sales drop

    Gap Inc. delivered another weak quarter as store closures outside of North America impacted its profitability and sales continue to slump at its namesake and Banana Republic divisions.   The retailer earned $204 million, or 51 cents per share, in the quarter ended Oct. 29. That compares with $248 million, or 61 cents per share, last year. Adjusted results were 60 cents per share, which matched estimates from FactSet.       
  • Staples brand to disappear from the United Kingdom

    A familiar U.S. retailer will soon make its exit from the U.K. retail scene.    Staples, which operates some 105 stores in the United Kingdom, has agreed to sell its U.K. retail business and operations to Hilco Capital Limited. The use of the Staples brand in the U.K. will be phased out over the coming months.   In May, Staples announced plans to explore strategic alternatives for its European operations as part of its new strategy.  
  • Hot Canadian brand opens first U.S. store

    A popular goose from up north has landed in Manhattan.   Canada Goose, the 60-year-old brand best known for its signature goose-down jacket with Arctic Circle logo and fur-trimmed hood, has opened a flagship in the SoHo section of Manhattan. It is the company’s first-ever U.S. store and only second store to date, with the first opening in Toronto’s Yorkdale Shopping Centre in October.   
  • Study: Asia Pacific leads mobile cross-border shopping

    As retailers expand their operations beyond their domestic borders, many are finding new opportunities to connect with new shoppers.    This message was delivered in “PayPal Cross-Border Consumer Research 2016,” a report from PayPal and Ipsos, a study that investigated the online domestic and cross-border shopping habits of more than 28,000 consumers in 32 countries.   
  • American Apparel gets $30 million DIP facility

    Encina Business Credit, has provided a $30 million debtor-in-possession (DIP) facility to American Apparel, which recently filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.   
  • Lowe’s disappoints in Q3

    Sales were up in the third quarter, but Lowe’s Companies’ financial performance impressed neither its investors nor its CEO.   The home improvement retailer’s net income dropped dramatically, owing to $462 million non-cash pre-tax charges. Net income declined to $379 million, compared to $736 million in the same quarter last year.
