Amazon offers portable RFID 'Just Walk Out' lanes for pop-up venues
Amazon is launching a portable cashier-free shopping experience that can go on the road with pop-up shops and events.
The online giant has developed the next generation of its RFID-enabled Just Walk Out frictionless shopping platform, featuring lanes that are portable and can be deployed in hours. Amazon is aiming the newest iteration of its cashierless checkout option at pop-up shops, festivals and other temporary retail locations.
The updated RFID lanes were deployed at 17 pilot locations in 2025, including a pop-up at the Camp Flog Gnaw music festival with Amazon Music selling artist merchandise, and a store at the Circuit of the Americas racetrack operated by concessionaire Proof of the Pudding.
This new solution builds on the walk-through lanes that use RFID tags to automatically detect what customers are carrying, enabling them to grab items and walk out by tapping their card to pay. It was first introduced in 2023.

The latest RFID lanes feature three enhancements: In-lane screens with an intuitive user interface guiding shoppers through the checkout process, motorized gates that automatically open and close for more seamless traffic flow, and dynamic pre-authorization that helps customers know what they're spending before they complete their purchase. Previously, customers using RFID lanes had to push through manual gates and wait until after checkout to see their cart total.
Based on generative AI technology, Amazon's Just Walk Out technology uses computer vision systems to track every item interaction in real time. These camera-based systems can detect when customers pick up, move, or put back items.
Because soft goods such as clothing and fan gear pose challenges for computer vision tracking, especially when customers try on items or carry them bundled, the updated RFID lanes leverage multiple antennas and smart algorithms that detect everything a customer is carrying by using specialized readers to detect unique tags on merchandise.
Each lane can handle up to six transactions per minute with built-in loss prevention designed to automatically detect unpaid items and close exit gates when necessary.
Amazon deployed both computer vision- and RFID-enabled Just Walk Out frictionless shoppijng systems at more than 150 new stores across a wide variety of venues in 2025. During 2025, Amazon also expanded Just Walk Out into France and plans to bring Just Walk Out technology to the United Arab Emirates in 2026.
