Amazon debuts upgraded Dash Cart at Whole Foods Market
Amazon is rolling out the latest version of its proprietary smart shopping cart solution at select locations of its organic brick-and-mortar grocery chain.
The online giant unveiled the newest Dash Cart in three Whole Foods Market stores in 2025: McKinney, Texas; Reston, Va.; and Westford, Mass. Based on positive customer response, Amazon plans to implement the redesigned cart, which is is 25% lighter but has 40% more capacity than the previous model, in dozens of locations across the U.S. by the end of 2026.
First announced in July 2020 and officially launched in September 2020, Dash Cart smart shopping carts use a combination of computer vision algorithms and sensor fusion to identify items customers put in the cart and allow them to shop, pay for their items and leave without having to wait in a checkout line.

The newest Dash Cart model features a built-in screen that displays prices and maintains a running total as customers shop. It also offers an Alexa shopping list integration which allows customers to add items to their list at home or on the go, then check off items directly on the screen. If customers remove an item from their basket, computer vision and sensor-fusion will recognize items and update the receipt in real time.
In addition, the revamped cart helps customers navigate the store with an interactive map and discover personalized deals on nearby products curated specifically for them.
Other features of the new Dash Cart are below.
•Built-in checkout scanner: A redesigned built-in scanner lets customers bypass the checkout line completely. The scanner is designed to be more responsive and positioned right next to the screen to make it easier and faster to scan items and add them to the cart.
When finished shopping, customers roll through a designated Dash Cart lane where the cart automatically processes payment.
•Expanded payment options: Customers can select their preferred payment method — credit card, mobile payment or linked payment method on their Amazon account — either when they start shopping or at checkout.
•Instant produce weighing: A built-in produce scale enables customers to weigh fruits and vegetables directly in their cart. The scale works in tandem with on-cart cameras, weight sensors and deep learning models to help ensure accurate pricing for every item and eliminate the need to search for in-store scales, print stickers, or associate assistance. The scale is positioned right beside the screen.
Amazon said it will continue to evolve Dash Cart based on customer feedback.
