Tom Ford Fashion offers remote virtual eyewear try-on
A fashion brand is leveraging 3D augmented reality technology to let customers see how glasses fit from the comfort of their homes.
Tom Ford Fashion, a subsidiary of Estee Lauder Corp., is leveraging 3D AR virtual try-on (VTO) technology for eyewear from beauty and fashion solutions provider Perfect Corp. The tool is launching in the U.S., Canadian, and European markets by the end of 2025.
The virtual glasses try-on solution enables Tom Ford Fashion customers to experiment with a selection of sunglasses in real time using any standard web browser. Users can see how different eyewear styles suit them on a screen using the 3D AR technology.
The experience also incorporates precise pupillary distance calculation to help deliver true-to-scale eyewear visualization by reflecting the exact distance between the user’s pupils so that customers can perceive the actual size and fit of each frame. Tom Ford Fashion hopes this feature will help to significantly reduce return rates.
The company implemented a customized version of Perfect Corp.’s VTO technology to help align the digital experience aligns with its brand image and visual identity. Tom Ford Fashion also seeks to drive sales and create stronger brand loyalty among its customers.
"Tom Ford Fashion epitomizes timeless sophistication, with this partnership with the iconic brand underscoring a shared commitment to innovation," said Alice Chang, founder and CEO of Perfect Corp. "Our 3D VTO solution delivers not only technical precision but also emotional resonance, helping brands like Tom Ford Fashion build stronger customer connections through innovation and personalization."
Virtual try-on proves popular with eyewear retailers
A number of eyewear retailers have rolled out a variety of virtual try-on solutions that employ artificial intelligence and AR technologies to let customers see how certain frames would look on their face using a photo of themselves.
For example, omnichannel eyewear brand Warby Parker recently partnered with digital creative agency Kettle to roll out Advisor, a mobile AI solution which delivers tailored recommendations based on a face scan in the Warby Parker app. Other solutions include the brand’s augmented reality-based Virtual Try-On and custom frame fitting iOS app features.
Walmart introduced virtual try-on and purchase of prescription eyewear online through the Walmart app or directly on Walmart.com in February 2024, and more recently expanded the assortment of glasses available for virtual try-on.
Meanwhile, GlassesUSA offers new proprietary artificial intelligence solution called "Pairfect Match AI" that is designed to seamlessly match customers with the perfect pair of glasses.
