  • 2017: The year when retailers smash their cookie cutters?

    Retail real estate professionals and retailers have a symbiotic relationship when it comes to creating great shopping centers and memorable destinations. The former can develop, lease, and broker spaces in great projects in compelling locations, but a retail or mixed-use project is ultimately defined by its tenants: the better the retailers, the better the project.  
  • Mid-America taps lead tenant liaison

    Mid-America Asset Management has named Tracee Johnson senior asset manager, investing her with full responsibility for maintaining relationships with retail tenants.   Johnson, a 10-year veteran of Mid-America, will also be responsible for budgeting and operational planning and oversight of the more than 60 million sq. ft. of retail the company leases and manages throughout the Midwest.   Johnson is a licensed real estate broker in Illinois.
  • Tanger opens its first center in Florida

    “Property Brothers” Drew and Jonathon Scott joined a slew of local dignitaries at last week’s opening of Tanger Outlets Daytona Beach, its 44th center and its first in Florida.   The Daytona location houses more than 70 stores, including H&M, Francesca’s, Perfumania, Rise Pies Pizza, and Under Armour.

    Plenty has been written about the importance of infusing experiences into shopping centers. Much has been written about placemaking. But not nearly enough has been written about the role a well-thought-out landscape environment contributes to overall experience and the power of "place." It’s more important to women shoppers than you might imagine.   
  • ICSC: In-store visits to surpass online shopping Thanksgiving weekend

    A majority of shoppers, 81%, intend to do most of their spending in physical stores during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend (Nov. 24-27). This total increases to 95% when you include consumers who will shop at those same physical retailers’ online channels (omnichannel retailers).   These are among the findings of the “2016 Black Friday Consumer Survey” from International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC).   
  • Report: Target hoping to open ‘hundreds’ of smaller stores

    Target Corp. is bullish on its smaller store concept.   Company CEO Brian Cornell he is “increasingly confident’ the retailer will open “hundreds of “small-format stores, USA Today reported.   We think we have the opportunity to enter many, many new neighborhoods," Cornell said on a conference call.  
  • Leasing firm: 2016 volume has been hot

    Levin Management president Matthew Harding says 2016 has been an especially active year for new retail leases. Over the past nine months, he reports his company handled leasing activity for more than 500,000 sq. ft. — over 400,000 sq. ft. of that in retail.   
  • Hot Canadian brand opens first U.S. store

    A popular goose from up north has landed in Manhattan.   Canada Goose, the 60-year-old brand best known for its signature goose-down jacket with Arctic Circle logo and fur-trimmed hood, has opened a flagship in the SoHo section of Manhattan. It is the company’s first-ever U.S. store and only second store to date, with the first opening in Toronto’s Yorkdale Shopping Centre in October.
