Target is getting a jump on back-to-school season.

Target Corp. is ready for its second biggest shopping season after Christmas.

The discount giant, which is currently hosting the Target Circle Week sales extravaganza through Saturday, July 13, is kicking its back-to-school and back-to-college sales campaign this week. While the Circle Week event is open only to members of Target's recently revamped free loyalty program, the back-to-school promotions are open to all customers — although loyalty members are being offered some special perks.

For the first time, Target is offering a list of 20 "must-have" school supplies that add up to less than $20 in total. The list offers 20 popular products such as colored pencils, liquid glue and notebooks. The retailer is also offering "thousands" of back-to-college essentials under $20.

Target noted that its Summit Ridge Kids backpack, selling for $5.00 and available in a range of colors and patterns, is its lowest- priced backpack in 10 years.

The company added that its new price reductions will also provide lower prices on thousands of food and beverage items, such as bread, peanut butter, produce, lunchbox snacks, crackers, fruit snacks, cookies, and kids' beverages.

Special back-to-school offers for members of Target Circle include a limited-time exclusive offer for teachers to sign up for the annual paid subscription of the Target Circle 360 expanded loyalty offering between July 14 and Aug. 24 and get same-day delivery for $49 for the first year.

In addition, beginning Sunday, July 14, the retailer will offer a one-time 20% teacher and college student appreciation discount for verified students and teachers who are Target Circle members. Teachers can obtain the discount through Saturday, Aug. 24. For college students, this discount is extended through Saturday, Sept. 28.

"Getting ready for a new school year is a busy time for teachers, students and parents, so Target's focused on making it affordable and easy for everyone," said Rick Gomez, executive VP and chief commercial officer, Target. "With our new monthly subscription options for Target Circle 360, unbeatable deals like 20 must-have school supplies for under $20 total, a $5 backpack, and an app feature that makes shopping for school supplies easier than ever, Target's taking the stress out of the season so families can focus on the excitement of a new school year."

Minneapolis-based Target Corporation operates nearly 2,000 stores and the Target.com e-commerce site.
