Target lowering prices on 5,000 frequently shopped items

Target price cuts
Target is reducing prices on about 5,000 items.

Target Corp. is reducing prices as consumers continue to struggle with inflationary pressures as they head into Memorial Day and the summer season.

The discounter said it will lower prices on approximately 5,000 frequently shopped items across its assortments. The prices cuts are already in effect on about 1,500 items, with thousands more to take effect over the summer.

The price reductions include items such as milk, meat, bread, soda, fresh fruit and vegetables, snacks, yogurt, peanut butter, coffee, diapers, paper towels, pet food and more. Target said will call out the price cuts in-store with easy-to-see red tags, as well as online at Target.com and the Target app.

The price reductions will collectively save consumers millions of dollars this summer, according to to the retailer, which noted it routinely adjusts its prices to ensure it is competitive within the markets it does business.

Target announced the price cuts ahead of its first-quarter earnings, which will be released on Wednesday. The reductions also come as Walmart’s low prices continues to attract higher-income shoppers.

"We know consumers are feeling pressured to make the most of their budget, and Target is here to help them save more," said Rick Gomez, executive VP and chief food, essentials and beauty officer, Target. "Our teams work hard to deliver great value every day, and these new lower prices across thousands of items will add up to additional big savings for the millions of consumers that shop Target each week for their everyday needs."

Members of Target Circle Card rewards program can get an additional 5% discount and will be eligible for other deals.

The price reductions can be found on national brands such as Huggies, Aveeno and Clorox, as well as Target’s owned brands, including Good & Gather and Everspring. Clorox Scented Wipes (75 ct), for example, have been reduced to $4.99 from $5.79.
