Retailers and restaurants alike made headlines in November with store expansions and new formats. 

Here are the major stories as reported by CSA, starting with the most recent.

  • Burlington Stores to open 100 new stores in 2025 The discount retailer said it plans to open 100 new stores in 2025 after a strong 2024, with the goal of reaching 500 new openings from 2024 to 2028. Burlington added that all of the stores it opened this year feature its 25,000-sq.-ft. prototype, with most located in busy strip malls with national co-tenants.
  • Mango to expand its U.S. store footprint in 2025 The Barcelona-based global fashion retailer has reached 40 company-owned stores in the U.S. and plans to open a couple more by the end of the year, giving it a total of 42 U.S. locations. Looking ahead, Mango plans to open more than 20 U.S. stores in 2025.
  • Jack in the Box to bring five locations to Detroit market After announcing its planned entrance into Michigan in February, the quick-serve chain has announced a new franchise deal that will bring five stores to the metro Detroit area. The new Jack in the Box locations will offer dine-in, drive-thru and mobile ordering options.
  • Subway unveils new global restaurant design The sandwich giant said the new format, billed as "Fresh Forward 2.0.,” is designed to further enhance the customer experience, improve convenience and help drive franchisee profitability. Subway’s new design features bold wall graphics, localized messages and signage, elevated lighting and warmer wood tones, as well as better support of Subway's growing digital sales channels.
  • Britain’s WH Smith targets 500 stores in North America by 2028 The London-based retailer, which opened 40 stores in North America this year, said it recently won some “significant new airport business,” including wins for stores at Dallas, Denver and Washington Dulles airports, and is also the preferred bidder for a further 15 stores across two major U.S. airports. WH Smith plans to open about 60 shops in North America during the next two years. 
  • The Paper Store launches $60 million expansion plan; debuts new retail concept The specialty gifts retailer unveiled the new concept, Uncharted, with a 12,000-sq.-ft. location at The Shops at Oak Brook Place in Oak Brook, Ill. Additional locations are slated to open across the country in 2025 as part of The Paper Store’s $60 million investment in new and existing stores over the next five years as it continues to expand into new markets, including the Midwest.

  • Huddle House signs its largest-ever franchise deal The chain, known for all-day breakfast and homestyle food, has signed its largest franchise deal in its history, securing 20 new units across Texas. The first new Huddle House location is slated to open by June of next year in Spring, Texas, a suburb of Houston, with three additional openings planned in surrounding areas that month.
  • ​​Aldi plans major expansion, renovation of U.S. headquarters The fast-growing discount grocer plans to add 800 stores nationwide by the end of 2028, and is expanding and renovating its U.S. corporate campus in Batavia, Ill. Aldi currently operates roughly 2,460 stores in the U.S.
  • Dutch Bros to accelerate openings in 2025 to 160-plus sites On an earnings call, the drive-thru coffee chain said it expects to accelerate shop openings in 2025 to at least 160 shops and further accelerate openings in 2026. Dutch Bros has said it plans to operate over 4,000 shops in the next 10 to 15 years.
  • California Pizza Kitchen to grow footprint in Nevada, Utah The California-based pizza restaurant has reached its first multi-unit franchise partnership agreement with Sundine LLC, a multi-unit restaurant operator. Sundine will acquire three CPK locations in its home market of Las Vegas, with plans to open six additional units across both Nevada and Utah over the next several years.
  • Qdoba signs 22 franchise deals in fiscal year The fast-casual chain says it has achieved 14 consecutive quarters of positive same-store sales and 22 new franchise signings nationwide in its fiscal year. Qdoba plans to open new stores in North and South Carolina, the Houston metropolitan area, Westchester County, N.Y. and more.
  • Playa Bowls on fast track for expansion in new markets The New Jersey-based superfruit bowl restaurant concept announced the signing of 52 franchise commitments and 11 store openings during the third quarter of 2024. Areas spearheading the future growth include the Denver metropolitan area, Dallas, Queens and Long Island, N.Y., as well as Nassau and Suffolk counties in New York.
