C-Suite Moves: November update

Here are the major leadership changes that occurred during November, starting with the most recent. (All changes have already taken effect unless otherwise noted.) 

•Sandwich giant Subway said that CEO John Chidsey will retire from the company at the end of 2024, after five years in the role. 

•Tom Kingsbury will step down as CEO of Kohl’s, Corp., effective Jan. 15, 2025, at which time he will be succeeded by Ashley Buchanan, who has served as CEO of Michaels Companies since 2020. 

•Mary Ellen Adcock, senior VP of operations at The Kroger Co., will assume the role of chief merchandising and marketing officer. She succeeds Stuart Aitken, who will remain in his role through Dec. 31, 2024. 

•Pennsylvania-based grocer The Giant Company promoted Will Regan to the role of CFO, with responsibility for all finance functions as well as real estate.

•Kenneth (Ken) Seipel was named CEO of value retailer Citi Trends. He has been serving as interim chief of Citi Trends since June 1, following the departure of David Makuen. In addition, Peter Sachse, executive chairman of the Citi Trends board, was appointed chairman of the board.

•Steve Schumacher was promoted to executive VP and chief people officer of Dollar Tree. Also, Jocelyn “Jocy” Konrad has been appointed chief of Dollar Tree Stores and enterprise store operations, with oversight of all Dollar Tree stores and enterprise store operations services.

Petco Health and Wellness Company tapped Joe Venezia as chief revenue officer, a newly-created role. Venezia joins Petco from The Michaels Companies, Inc., where he spent nearly four years as COO of stores.

•Abigail Jacobs joins REI Co-op as chief marketing officer. Most recently, she was with Sephora, where she spent more than six years total, including the last four as senior VP of integrated marketing and brand.

•In two promotions, BJ’s Wholesale Club named Scott Schmadeke, senior VP of field and fresh operations, as executive VP and chief operations officer, and Krystyna Kostka, currently senior VP of operations, as chief supply chain officer. 

Chipotle Mexican Grill appointed Scott Boatwright as CEO. The seven-year Chipotle veteran was appointed to the position on an interim basis in August, after chief executive Brian Niccol unexpectedly announced he was departing to take the reins at Starbucks.

•Citing health reasons, Rick Dreiling stepped down as chairman and CEO of Dollar Tree. Michael C. Creedon Jr., COO, was named appointed interim chief. 

SpartanNash tapped former Kroger and Target executive Djouma Barry as its senior VP and chief retail officer. 

•Specialty and organic grocery chain Natural Grocers appointed Richard Hallé as CFO, effective Jan. 1, 2025. Most recently, he served as a managing director of Alvarez and Marsal Private Equity Performance Improvement Group.
