Retailers and restaurants alike made headlines in January with store expansions and new formats. 

Here are the major stories as reported by CSA, starting with the most recent.

  • Paris Baguette eyes at least 100 new openings in 2025 The bakery cafe chain is looking to expand in the new year. CEO Darren Tipton said there is “a true pathway” to 100 or more new Paris Baguette openings across North America in 2025 as the team prepares to expand the brand’s presence to over 35 states. Nearly 80 leases have been signed going into 2025.
  • Walmart Canada to make "landmark investment" in stores Walmart Canada has announced a “landmark” C$6.5 billion (U.S. $4.51 billion) investment over the next five years that includes building dozens of new stores, beginning with five supercenters in Ontario and Alberta that will open by 2027.
  • Woof Gang eyes 70 new locations in 2025 The specialty retailer of exclusive gourmet treats, food and supplies for pets along with professional dog grooming services told Chain Store Age that its goal is to open more than 70 new locations in 2025, with plans to expand its footprint in California and the Northeastern United States. New state targets for 2025 include Washington, Oregon, Montana, North Dakota and Maryland.
  • Sprouts to expand Florida footprint The fresh, natural and organic foods grocer says it will bring at least seven new stores to Florida in 2025. Sprouts’ first new Florida location will open in St. Johns, followed by additional stores across the Orlando metropolitan area, St. Petersburg, and in Palm Beach County.
  • Love's to upgrade 50 stores, open 20 new locations in 2025 The convenience chain plans to start construction on 20 new stores and begin updating 50 existing locations under its Strategic Remodel Initiative, which launched in 2022. More than half of Love’s 655 locations will be newly constructed or remodeled by 2035.

  • Smoothie King eyes 100+ new stores in 2025 The fast-casual smoothie chain is forecasting approximately 105 new store openings in the new year, with 26 new store commitments signed in the fourth quarter of 2024, including multi-unit agreements in key markets such as Atlanta, Little Rock, Ark. and South Bend, Ind.
  • Kurt Geiger eyes 50 new North American stores U.K.-based footwear and accessories brand Kurt Geiger is planning to expand its presence in North America, opening 50 stores during the next five years. The fashion brand opened two stores in California, one in New York and two in Mexico in late 2024, and an additional five stores are in development across North America for early 2025.
  • Sephora to redesign entire store fleet across North America Beauty giant Sephora is redesigning all of its stores across the U.S. and Canada, Artemis Patrick, president and CEO of Sephora North America, said during a presentation at the National Retail Federation’s annual Big Show in New York City. The company operates more than 700 stores across North America.
  • Shake Shack plots massive expansion The fast-casual burger chain said it now sees the potential for its company-operated footprint to reach “at least” 1,500 locations over time, versus its prior target of 450 domestic sites. Shake Shack expects to open about 80 to 85 new restaurants this year, including 45 company-operated locations.
  • Freddy's adds 15 stores to pipeline; to enter new East Coast state Quick-serve chain Freddy’s has signed three franchise deals that will expand the burger chain’s presence across Nebraska, North Dakota and Maryland with 15 locations. Freddy's currently operates over 550 restaurants, with more than 130 locations in development for the next two years.
  • Report: Barnes & Noble to open 60 stores in 2025 Book giant Barnes & Noble is planning to open about 60 stores in the United States this year, according to a report by the Financial Times. In 2024, Barnes & Noble opened 57 stores in the U.S.
