Walmart Canada in ‘landmark’ $4.51 billion investment in stores, supply chain
Walmart Canada is ramping up its plans to accelerate store growth across the country. It’s also selling its fleet business.
The retailer announced a “landmark” C$6.5 billion (U.S. $4.51 billion) investment over the next five years that includes building dozens of new stores, beginning with five supercenters in Ontario and Alberta that will open by 2027. The new stores include a location Port Credit, an area in Mississauga, Ont., that will open in spring 2025, and one at Hopedale Mall, Oakville, Ont. that will open in late 2025.
Three new supercenters in Alberta are expected to open by 2027, with locations in Calgary, Edmonton and Fort McMurray.
“Walmart Canada is on an ambitious growth journey to serve even more Canadians — better and differently than ever before,” said Gui Loureiro, regional CEO, Walmart Canada, Chile, Mexico and Central America. “This $6.5 billion investment is the largest we’ve made in Canada towards expanding our footprint since we first arrived here 30 years ago."
In addition, Walmart Canada’s most advanced distribution center facility will open in spring 2025, in Vaughan, a city in Ontario. The retailer is also investing in modernizing its distribution centers.

In another move, Walmart Canada has signed an agreement with Canada Cartage – the country’s largest provider of fleet services — to buy Walmart Canada’s fleet business.
“Canada Cartage has deep expertise in providing dedicated fleet services and has been serving Canadian businesses for more than 110 years,” said Matt Kelly, VP of supply chain, Walmart Canada. “Through Canada Cartage we can serve customers even better and more flexibly and provide fleet employees with exciting growth opportunities at one of Canada’s largest and most trusted supply chain service providers.”
Walmart Canada’s latest investment comes as the retailer completes a C$3.5 billion investment that it announced in 2020. As part of that investment, the company updated more than 180 stores, opened two new store and relocated two others, and opened several distribution centers.
Walmart Canada operates more than 400 stores across the county.
