  • IHL: Tablets and smartphones transforming retail experience

    Franklin, Tenn. -- Tablets and smartphones are redefining the retail shopping experience and will be a $5 billion market per year by 2015, according to a new research report by IHL Group.

    The study, Mobility: A Gutenberg Moment for Retail, A Threat to POS, found that the release of the Apple iPad and Amazon Kindle Fire have created price points and form factors for mobile devices that are finally allowing retailers to arm their associates with tools that will transform the in-store experience.

  • NRF joins in worldwide tributes to Steve Jobs

    Cupertino, Calif. -- Apple announced Wednesday that its co-founder Steve Jobs has died at age 56. Jobs suffered from a rare form of pancreatic cancer, and stepped down from his CEO post in August.

    Apple released a brief statement, saying "We are deeply saddened to announce that Steve Jobs passed away today. Steve's brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve."

  • Report: Consumer confidence weak

    Washington, D.C. -- A Thursday report by Bloomberg said that consumer confidence last week capped the worst quarterly performance in more than two years, when the U.S. economy was still in a recession.

    The Bloomberg Consumer Comfort Index rose to minus 50.2 in the week ended Oct. 2, from the prior period’s minus 53 that was the second-lowest level on record. The gauge averaged minus 48.4 from July through September, the third-worst quarterly reading of all time and the weakest since minus 49.9 in the first three months of 2009.

  • Survey: Two out of three U.S. consumers surveyed want self-service options when shopping

    Duluth, Ga. -- A majority of U.S. consumers believe that self-service technologies such as self-checkout and kiosks improve the store experience, with almost half of younger shoppers preferring to use self-checkout in stores, according to a new survey by The NPD Group for NCR Corp.

  • Golfsmith partners with South African retailer

    Austin, Texas -- Golfsmith International said Tuesday that it has established a partnership with The MoreGolf Group – South Africa’s largest golf retailer – as part of a global strategy toward growth.

    At 78 stores, Golfsmith is the largest golf specialty retailer in the United States. It said it will reinvest the income generated from the just-announced partnership into its core U.S. business.

  • NRF survey: Retailers use background checks for safety

    Washington, D.C. -- A new survey released Tuesday by the National Retail Federation found that nearly all retailers rely on background checks to keep their customers, and themselves, safe.

    The survey, completed by retail executives from 96 of the nation’s leading department stores, mass merchants, discounters, drug stores, grocery stores and restaurants, examined retailers’ use of background screenings during the application and employment process.

  • Claire's Stores names head of European business

    Chicago -- Claire's Stores, Inc. said Tuesday that it has named Beatrice Lafon President of the European Division, effective immediately.

    In her position as President of Europe, Lafon will lead the continued growth and expansion of the European business, with direct oversight of buying, merchandising and allocation, supply chain, stores, and the overall operations for approximately 1,100 stores across 13 countries.

    Lafon will report to Gene Kahn, CEO. 

  • IHL report details growing use of tablets and impact on POS

    New York — More than four million tablets will be used in retail by 2015, according to IHL Group. The group’s new report, “Mobility: A Gutenberg Moment for Retail, A Threat to POS,” has forecasts for rugged handhelds, consumer handhelds (i.e., iPhones, iPod Touch), and tablet computers to be used at store level from now until 2015 in North America.
