  • Shopko CEO lands at Payless

    Topeka, Kan. -- Following earlier reports on Wednesday that Shopko CEO Paul Jones had departed the company to pursue another opportunity, Payless Holdings has announced that Jones has stepped in as chief executive for the shoe chain.

    Jones, whose appointment is effective Oct. 22 and whose retail history includes executive positions with Sears and Kohl’s, will be based in Topeka.

  • Lowe's honored by EPA

    Mooresville, N.C. -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded Lowe’s Cos. the highest honors for industry leadership in its WaterSense and SmartWay programs.

    Lowe’s received the 2012 SmartWay Excellence Award for its environmental performance in the freight transportation industry. Last week, the EPA named Lowe’s the 2012 WaterSense Retailer Partner of the Year for its efforts to educate consumers about water-efficient products and practices.

  • Employment Trends Index down in September

    New York -- The Conference Board Employment Trends Index decreased again in September, following a downward revision in August. The index now stands at 107.86, down from the revised figure of 108.23 in August. The September figure is 5.4% higher than a year ago.

  • Zara Home launches U.S. e-commerce site

    New York -- Inditex’s home-décor concept Zara Home said Tuesday it is unveiling Zarahome.com in the U.S. on Tuesday.

    The new e-commerce site will feature home textiles as well as select furniture, tableware, cutlery and decorative accessories.

    Zara Home currently operates in 32 countries with more than 325 stores and offers e-commerce in 18 countries.

     

  • Wal-Mart testing same-day delivery for holidays

    Bentonville, Ark. -- Wal-Mart Stores said Tuesday it is testing same-day delivery service in four markets over the holiday shopping season.

    The service is being tested in northern Virginia, Philadelphia, Minneapolis and San Francisco/San Jose, Calif. Geared toward customers who buy popular items online during the holidays, the test includes about 5,000 items and builds on a same-day grocery delivery service the retailer launched in San Jose in April 2010 and tested in San Francisco in 2011.

  • Barneys to close store in NorthPark Center, Dallas

    New York -- Barneys New York will close its 88,000-sq.-ft. store in NorthPark Center, Dallas. It will remain open until April 2013.

    "After careful consideration, Barneys New York has exercised its contractual right to terminate the lease for its Dallas location prior to its expiration," said a spokeswoman.
     

  • Survey: Consumers link unclean restrooms with poor management

    New York -- Some businesses are coming up short with their restroom facilities, according to a survey by Bradley Corp., a manufacturer of commercial plumbing fixtures. Fifty-one percent of survey respondents reported having had a particularly unpleasant experience in a public restroom due to the condition of the facilities.  

  • Sears’ holiday plans include enhanced layaway services, mobile POS

    Hoffman Estates, Ill. -- Kmart and Sears are gearing up for the holiday shopping season with the elimination of layaway service fees, a new layaway home delivery service and an enhanced in-store mobile experience.
