  • Extreme couponing Target style

It was a wonderful weekend to be a coupon clipper, especially for shoppers looking to load their pantry with P&G brands. In Sunday newspapers this weekend, the consumer goods giant dropped its P&G Brand Saver insert, which featured some very high value coupons, including one for $2 off a 100-ounce jug of Tide that was ostensibly offered as a gift to shoppers to commemorate the detergent’s 65th anniversary.

  • Container import volume down 6% in September from August

Newark, N.J.  -- U.S. containerized import volume fell 6% in September from the month before as surging shipping of auto parts was not enough to offset growing pessimism among retailers about consumer demand heading into the holidays, according to figures from The Journal of Commerce/PIERS.

Imports fell 6% from August to September, and the disappointing numbers for such items as toys, apparel and home goods signaled retailers are restraining their inventory growth on the cusp of the holiday shopping season.

  • Toy imports dip 9% in U.S. despite approaching holidays

Newark, N.J. -- A report released Friday by the Journal of Commerce/PIERS showed that U.S. toy imports dropped 9% year-over-year in September, as the country's retailers apparently chose caution heading into the 2011 holiday season.

The drop in container volume, most of it from China, was the eighth straight for toys coming into the United States and a strong sign that the nation's stores are concerned with figures showing waning consumer confidence and opting to keep inventories lean rather than face deep-discount sales.
