  • American Apparel files Chapter 11

    In a not unanticipated move, American Apparel filed for bankruptcy protection in Delaware on Monday. But the company said its stores will not be affected by the filing, and no store closings or layoffs were announced.

    The Los Angeles-based retailer, which has not reported a profit since 2009, has been struggling under the weight of big debts sluggish sales and a protracted — and costly — legal battle with its founder and ousted CEO, the controversial Dov Charney.

    Naturalizer is looking to engage with its core shopper on an emotional level by launching a digital marketing campaign that focuses on how style transcends generations.

    The Naturalizer brand plans to feature the special bond between mother and daughter in this omnichannel campaign, as seen through the Durso, Sambucini and Baker families. Each family has styled a different Naturalizer shoe – with mother and daughter adding their own twist.

  • Report: Kroger testing video strips in aisles

    Kroger is in the process of installing "smart shelf technology" at one of its stores in Ohio, according to Cincinnati.com.

    The grocery chain is completing the installation of 2,200 Edge shelves throughout the center of the supermarket, including most aisles with dry goods. Today the tech features price tagging beneath the respective items, but future applications could include providing on-demand nutritional info, Cincinnati.com reports.

  • Another retailer offers big holiday layaway incentives

    GameStop has joined a growing list of retailers offering a new incentive for a vast segment of consumers to start thinking about holiday shopping: a comprehensive layaway program.

    The company has joined Kmart, Walmart and other retailers in launching an enhanced layaway program in the past few weeks designed to help shoppers access the hottest gifts of the season.

  • Staples just says no to Black Thursday

    Staples is bucking the Black Thursday trend by making a statement, literally, about closing its stores on Thanksgiving Day in order to allow its customers, employees and their families to enjoy the holiday.

    The retailer issued a statement on Thursday saying that despite being open on Thanksgiving Day the past two years, this year it says customers and employees should have the chance to stay home with family and friends. Stores will open at 6 a.m. on Black Friday.

    Retailers wondering who among their peers is an omnichannel leader have an answer.

    The new Omnichannel Retail Index from the National Retail Federation and e-digital consultancy FitforCommerce identifies the top performers among 120 retailers in several key areas of omnichannel commerce. The areas include showing in-store product availability, multidevice/platform shopping experience, email and loyalty marketing programs, delivery to customer, and customer returns.
