Target to turn Times Square billboards into tote bags

9/2/2009

New York City Target is set to make a big splash in the heart of Times Square on Friday, wrapping vinyl ad-panels filled with bold graphics and pop art around two sides of Times Square Tower. The vinyl panels, inspired by New York City and the Target’s bulls-eye and created by local artists, will eventually be re-purposed into Anna Sui-designed tote bags.

The billboards will remain in place through October. But starting Sept. 4, consumers will be able to place orders for the totes on Target’s Web site. Customers will be able to select from which artist’s billboard they would their tote to be fashioned. The bags will be priced at $29.99.

According to reports, Target estimates it will offer 1,600 totes, with 300 to 575 bags being made from each of the panels.
