Macy's adds interactive fun to Black Friday

11/20/2014

In an effort to create even more buzz for its holiday promotions, Macy’s will give away $1 million in prizes during Black Friday weekend.

Using the Macy’s mobile app, customers shopping in-store will be able to scan QR codes to enter the giveaway during doorbuster hours, beginning at 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day through 1 p.m. on Nov. 28, and then again on Saturday, Nov. 29, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Upon scanning, customers will see whether they have won a prize code worth $10, $25, $50 or $250. At the end of each hour, a new pool of prizes will become available and customers can play again. No purchase is necessary. Customers are encouraged to download the Macy’s mobile app in advance.

“This year, we’re adding another level of entertainment to our highly-anticipated Black Friday doorbusters and specials,” said Martine Reardon, chief marketing officer at Macy’s. “As customers navigate their shopping route throughout the store, they will be able to score digital gift codes offering instant wins via Macy’s mobile app. This element of surprise along with a playful new commercial featuring our official holiday ambassador, SpongeBob SquarePants, is certain to add a new element of fun to our customers’ shopping experience on Black Friday this year.”

The Macy's ad featuring SpongeBob Squarepants debuts on Sunday. The cartoon character resonates with consumers across all age groups, attracting children, parents and millennials who are drawn to cartoon characters, according to Reardon at Macy's. Millennials are the most likely to shop on Black Friday this year, according to a survey of 500 sample U.S. consumers (including 160 millennials), conducted by Accenture Research. Eighty-six percent of millennials plan to shop on Black Friday compared with 66% of overall respondents.

Macy's has 800 stores in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and Guam.
