BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Books-A-Million announced the company has submitted a bid in the Borders Inc. bankruptcy proceedings to purchase, among other things, the inventory, fixtures, equipment, and leasehold interests for 30 Borders locations. Under the proposed bid, Books-A-Million will assume the leases for these locations and continue to operate these stores.

Borders Group on Thursday won court approval to liquidate its remaining 399 stores.

J.C. Penney marketing chief Mike Boylson is trading the retail game for another type of game entirely: baseball. The 32-year J.C. Penney veteran officially left the company on July 1, and is already hard at work on his next venture: Boylson and a pal are opening a D-Bat baseball and softball training franchise in Allen, Texas, not far from J.C. Penney’s headquarters.

MOORESVILLE, N.C. — Lowe’s has announced the promotion of M. Lee Reeves to SVP, deputy general counsel and assistant secretary. Reeves will continue to report to Gaither Keener, EVP, general counsel, secretary and chief compliance officer.

In his new role, Reeves’ responsibilities include leading the corporate transactions, intellectual property and information technology legal teams.

Reeves joined Lowe’s in 2004 as senior counsel, after serving as a member of a private law firm. 

NAPERVILLE, Ill. — OfficeMax announced that it will offer customers support education by carrying an extensive selection of Boise brand paper products with the Box Tops for Education seal on the package. OfficeMax retail stores and OfficeMax retail partners are currently the only office super stores to carry Boise's Box Tops for Education products, the company reported.

Chicago -- A report released Thursday by ShopperTrak found that retailers should expect fewer shoppers this back-to-school season, but average tickets are anticipated to be larger.

According to ShopperTrak, national retail sales, when compared with the same period last year, will rise 3.8% in August, while foot traffic will decrease 2.9%.
 

SAN JOSE, Calif. — eBay reported that revenue for the second quarter ended June 30, increased 25% to $2.8 billion, compared with the same period of 2010. The company recorded second quarter net income on a GAAP basis of $283.4 million, or 22 cents per diluted share, and non-GAAP net income of $630.9 million, or 48 cents per diluted share.

The company reported that its PayPal business' net total payment volume grew 34% to $28.7 billion in the second quarter of 2011 compared to the same period of last year.

Ann Arbor, Mich. -- Borders Group on Thursday won court approval to liquidate its remaining 399 stores, even as it negotiates to sell up to 35 stores to Books-a-Million.

"This is a bittersweet day," said U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Martin Glenn before a packed courtroom. "There are a lot of sad people around the country, a lot of sad people in the corporate headquarters. But there has been a late-breaking development."
