  • Dick’s sees 53% profit surge in Q1, raises outlook; to open 40 stores in 2012

    Pittsburgh -- Dick's Sporting Goods Inc. reported Tuesday that profit for the quarter ended April 28 surged 53% to $57.2 million, compared with $37.5 million for the year-ago period. The sporting goods retailer raised its earnings outlook for the year.

    “For 2012, we are raising our full year guidance as we continue to invest in new stores and our e-commerce business, as well as our margin accelerators including inventory management, private brands, and product mix shift,” said Edward W. Stack, CEO.

  • Retail sales stagger in April

    WASHINGTON — A Tuesday report by the Commerce Department showed that U.S. retail sales during the month of April edged up 0.1%, following a 0.7% gain in March and marking the smallest rise of the year so far. The gain was in line with projections.

    Excluding auto sales, retail sales climbed 0.1% in April.

  • Saks profit climbs in Q1, revenues miss

    New York -- Saks Inc. reported Tuesday that net income for the quarter ended April 28 rose 13.2% to $32.1 million, from $28.4 million last year.

    Revenue for the period climbed 3.8% to $753.6 million, missing Wall Street’s expected $762.6 million. Same-store sales rose 4.8%.

  • Unseasonable weather warms up sales, earnings at Home Depot

    ATLANTA — Warm weather and demand for core products helped drive up sales and earnings at The Home Depot during its fiscal first quarter. The company reported sales of $17.8 billion for the first quarter of fiscal 2012, a 5.9% increase from the first quarter of fiscal 2011. Comparable-store sales for the first quarter of fiscal 2012 were positive 5.8%, and comp sales for U.S. stores were positive 6.1%.

  • J.C. Penney loses $163 million in Q1; same-store sales slide 18.9%

    Dallas -- J. C. Penney Co. on Tuesday reported a loss of $163 million, or 75 cents a share, for its fiscal quarter ended April 28, 2012, compared with a year-earlier profit of $64 million.

    Excluding markdowns to reduce inventory levels, restructuring costs and pension-plan expenses, the loss was $55 million or $0.25 per share, compared with a year-earlier profit of 36 cents.

  • Golfsmith loss widens in first quarter

    Austin, Texas -- Golfsmith reported Tuesday that it posted a loss of $3.6 million in the first quarter, compared with a loss of $3.1 million in the year-ago period.

    Sales improved 11% to $90.5 million for the quarter. Same-store sales grew 8.5%.
