    If you’ve been reading this column over the last four years, let me first say, “thank you!” It’s gratifying to think that my musings about retail and retail real estate have kept your attention and interest. In this, my 100th and final (except for an occasional contribution) Retail Rap, I wanted to tackle the big question: What’s next? Where is the retail industry — particularly brick-and-mortar — headed in the months and years ahead?

  • New West Elm boasts armory-inspired design

    Brooklyn, N.Y. -- The design of West Elm’s upcoming store was inspired by a armory.

    The retailer will open its ninth New York store on July 23. The 10,600-sq,-ft. store is located at Culver Road Armory, in Rochester.

    Express Inc. has named a new CFO, and the retailer did not look far to fill the role.

  • Boy Scouts prepare for better store experience

    Irving, Texas - Boy Scouts of America (BSA) has always lived by the motto “Be Prepared,” and that spirit extends to its in-store retail activities.

    The youth organization has selected Raymark's store management software suite for deployment in its 182 Scout Shops, 220 independent Council Shops, High Adventure Trading Posts and temporary Scout sales locations.

  • Batteries Plus Bulbs sees the omnichannel light

    Hartland, Wis. – Battery, lightbulb and smartphone/tablet repair franchise Batteries Plus Bulbs is expanding its omnichannel experience — and that includes its physical store portfolio.

    The company has launched a new e-commerce site, with a new and improved infrastructure, that ties its online presence more tightly to its nationwide network of more than 650 stores. And as part of its omnichannel growth strategy, Batteries Plus Bulbs plans to open 50 new locations across the country in 2015.

  • Are men the same as women when it comes to shopping?

    San Diego – Contrary to popular wisdom that women desire a highly interactive shopping experience while men just want to be left alone, the two genders may actually have some similar retail preferences.

    According to Interactions Marketing’s latest Retail Perceptions report, “Does Gender Influence Shopping Behavior?” men and women’s shopping behaviors have many similarities.

  • BJ's Wholesale Club focuses on member loyalty

    BJ's Wholesale Club is forming a new partnership with Toshiba as the retailer accelerates its efforts to drive member loyalty and sales.

    BJ’s Wholesale Club Inc. says it has selected Toshiba TCxCare to manage and be the single point of contact for “wall to wall” maintenance services at its 200 stores.
