  • Report: Under Armour has big store expansion plans for 2016

    Athletic wear giant Under Armour plans to open some 200 store in 2016, according to The Street. While the brand did not comment, the report said the expansion would likely include a mixture of store types, including outlet locations, “Brand House” stores, (the company’s full-price, experiential format) and in-store shops.     City Furniture is opening a new Ashley Furniture HomeStore at the Mall at Wellington Green, Wellington, Florida., and rolling out a new design look for its Pembroke Pines City Furniture showroom in Pembroke Pines, Florida.   • C-store giant names CFO

    Alimentation Couche-Tard Inc. has appointed Claude Tessier as its CFO, effective Jan. 28. The leader in the Canadian convenience store industry, Couche-Tard is the largest independent convenience store operator in the United States terms of number of company-operated stores.

    The industry veteran joins Couche-Tard from Canadian grocer Sobeys Inc., where he was president of the IGA Operations Business Unit.

  • The Great Trade-In is back at Toys 'R' Us

    Toys "R" Us is urging shoppers to bring in their recalled and outdated baby items during its annual Great Trade-In event next month at stores nationwide.

    The event will take place at Babies "R" Us and Toys "R" Us stores Feb. 1 through Feb. 29. And, new this year, the company's Rewards"R"Us loyalty members can take advantage of early access to the in-store event beginning Jan. 29, by showing their Rewards"R"Us card during checkout.

    The need to provide a seamless customer experience is having a big impact on the types of solutions retailers are trying to implement.

    According the new Retail Industry Insight benchmark report conducted by Retail Systems Research for SPS Commerce Inc., e-commerce and stores have switched places as the top growth driver for retail IT purchases. Retailers rank growing e-commerce sales as their top priority (75%) followed by improving the in-store experience (53%).

  • Golf retailer expanding west

    PGA Tour Superstore continues to broaden its footprint with its first store in Utah.

    The retailer announced it will open a 25,000-sq.-ft. store in Sandy, Utah, in April. The Sandy store, which will feature four state-of-the-art simulators, four practice hitting bays and an expansive putting green measuring more than 750 sq. ft., is the first of five new store locations the company has announced for 2016.

  • Starbucks shuttering ‘tea bar’ format

    Starbucks Corp. is still hot for tea, but it’s not feeling too warm and cozy about its Teavana "tea bar" format, which debuted in New York City about two years ago. The concept sought to elevate the tea-drinking experience, much the way Starbucks did for coffee, and featured an array of tea-related beverages and food items in a comfortable environment that encouraged people to linger.
