    British supermarket giant Tesco puts a friendlier and more contemporary spin on its hypermarket format at its revamped store in Swansea, Wales.   The new format, developed by Swedish design firm Blink in collaboration with Tesco's in-house team and corporate identity group Wolff Olins, offers innovative digital services, a more personal approach and simplified shopping for different needs. The remodeled store, which opened in June, is delivering a significantly higher profit, according to Blink.    
  • Report: Amazon’s 1-Click patent runs its course

    A patent that changed how customers make purchases online has expired — and opened up new opportunities for competitors.   The “1-Click” patent filed by Amazon in 1997, expired Tuesday. As a result, any brand can now feature this functionality on their own e-commerce site, according to C-Net.  
  • Discounter swaps out Apple devices for Android on its sales floor

    Target associates are using new devices to complete their daily tasks.    After using iPod Touches for the last three years to manage stock, pull items, and handle other essential sales floor duties, Target is now putting Android devices into its associates’ hands, according to Gizmodo.

  • Done deal: Staples goes private

    Staples is done trading on Nasdaq.   Sycamore Partners announced that it has completed its acquisition of the office supply giant. Under the terms of the deal, which was announced in June, Staples was acquired by the private equity firm in a transaction valued at approximately $6.9 billion.   
  • First Look: Pottery Barn flagship, New York City

    Pottery Barn is showing off its latest store concept at its just-opened flagship in Manhattan's Flatiron District.   Located in a landmark Beux-Arts styled building, the 17,000-sq.-store features original columns and adorned ceiling accents. It emphasizes local partnerships, design services and exclusive products, including one-of-kind vintage items.   
  • Study: Millennials put a premium on store associates

    Generation Y may be tech-savvy, but for many, store employees still play a pivotal role in their overall shopping experience.   In fact, 63% of shoppers aged 18-35 see store associates as extremely important to their retail experience, according to the “Store Associates Report,” from ChargeItSpot. The study is based on responses from more than 600 shoppers at malls across the country.

    As retailers consider how to best use their physical spaces in a digital world, Nordstrom is going "local," debuting a small-format retail concept that offers all sorts of personal services, but has no dedicated inventory.
