  • Road rage: proposed trucking regulations draw RILA’s wrath

    Reducing the number of hours truck drivers are allowed to spend behind the wheel sounds like it would be a good idea to improve the nation’s roadways, but nothing could be further from the truth, according the Retail Industry Leaders Association.

    The trade group is looking to defeat new rules proposed by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration that includes a provision that would reduce to 10 from 11 the number of hours drivers are allowed to drive before taking a 34-hour break.

  • American Eagle earnings up, CEO to retire

    New York -- American Eagle Outfitters Inc. officially announced the retirement of its chief executive officer. The chain, which has seen its seen sales falter of late, also posted a 47% rise in profits for the fourth quarter on cost-cutting.

    American Eagle said its CEO James O'Donnell, 70, will stay with the retailer until a successor is chosen and will work through the transition period. O'Donnell started with American Eagle as its COO in 2000. He became co-CEO in 2002 and CEO in 2003. 

  • Bon-Ton Q4 income, sales up

     York, Penn. -- Bon-Ton Stores Inc. said Wednesday its fiscal fourth-quarter profit climbed 6%.

    The department store chain said its net income rose to $85 million for the period ended Jan. 29, up from $80.3 million a year earlier.

    Revenue edged up 1% to $1.03 billion from $1.02 billion.

    Revenue at stores open at least a year rose 0.8%.

    Bon-Ton Stores' annual net income was $21.5 million. In the prior year, it lost $4.1 million. 

  • Dick’s maintains momentum with same-store sales streak

    PITTSBURGH -- Dick’s Sporting Goods on Tuesday showed why it is the nation’s leading sporting goods retailer by producing record profits and a 9.4% same-store sales increase that extended to six its string of consecutive quarterly comp gains.

  • Best Buy in a 'rewarding' partnership

    TORONTO -- Best Buy is partnering with Points International, which operates loyalty reward program management platform, www.points.com, to enable Reward Zone members the ability to exchange points between their Best Buy Reward Zone and their other participating loyalty program accounts as well as trade with other users via the Points.com loyalty marketplace.

  • Kitchens and gardens shine at Home Depot

    ATLANTA -- Home Depot's fourth quarter saw positive comp-store sales for the fifth straight period. Kitchens and gardens were among the highest-performing categories.

    According to Home Depot's Craig Menear, EVP merchandising, the departments that outperformed the company average were kitchens, outdoor garden, indoor garden, electrical and tools.

    Comparable-store sales for the company increased 3.9% for the three months ended Jan. 30. For stores in the United States, comp sales were positive 4.8%.

  • March Consumer Reports Index sign of economic improvement

    YONKERS, N.Y. -- In another positive sign for the economy,  the March Consumer Reports Index reveals its most positive results in two years.

    According to Consumer Reports National Research Center, which conducts the survey, the Consumer Sentiment Index has broken into positive territory at 50.3, which is up from 48.7 a month ago. This is the first time sentiment has been in positive territory since it was first measured in October 2008.

  • Dick’s Q4 income jumps 30%; 34 stores on tap for 2011

    Pittsburgh -- Dick's Sporting Goods said Tuesday its net income increased 30% in the fourth quarter on improving revenue.

    The sporting goods retailer reported net income of $87.5 million in the quarter ended Jan. 29, from $67.4 million last year.

  • Retail Orphan Initiative announces computer recycling program for retailers

    Nashville, Tenn. -- The Retail Orphan Initiative (RetailROI) announced that it has created a computer recycling program in partnership with the GEAR Foundation. The program, which recycles retailers’ computers that are less than four years old and have expired warranties, will immediately create jobs for physically and mentally challenged young adults as the computers are erased, refurbished, and resold.

  • Chipotle selects Incentives Advisors to maximize hiring credits

    Tempe, Ariz. -- Incentives Advisors, which specializes in turning human resources departments into profit centers by identifying, administering and securing hiring-related government incentives, added Chipotle Mexican Grill to its customer roster. The company will deploy Incentives+ tax credit screening solution to make it easy to screen job candidates for over 100 federal, state, and local hiring credits.
