  • Lowe’s Q2 profit up 10%; trims outlook

    Mooresville, N.C. -- Lowe's second-quarter net income rose a better-than-expected 10%, helped by improving weather. But the chain lowered its full-year revenue outlook slightly, citing its year-to-date sales and prior assumptions for the second half.

    For the three months ended Aug. 1, Lowe's Cos. earned $1.04 billion, up from $941 million in the prior year.

    Revenue increased 6% to $16.6 billion, topping Wall Street's estimates.

    Same-store sales were up 4.4%.

  • Staples Q2 profit, sales decline

    Framingham, Mass. -- Staples Inc. reported Wednesday that its net income in the second quarter declined 20% to $81.88 million, from $102.53 million in the prior year.  

    Its results included $101 million of pre-tax restructuring and other related charges primarily associated with its closure of 80 stores, along with its plan to close approximately 40 stores in North America during the second half. (Staples had previously announced the planned closings.)

    Sales were down 2% to $5.22 billion, which topped analysts' estimates.

  • Food Lion to remodel 45 Greenville, North Carolina, stores

    Salisbury, N.C. -- Delhaize America banner Food Lion has unveiled a new shopping experience for customers in 31 stores in the greater Wilmington, North Carolina, market, and has announced plans to remodel 45 stores in Greenville as part of the grocery’s "Easy, Fresh and Affordable…You Can Count on Food Lion Every Day" strategy.

  • McDonald’s names its first VP of digital in the United States

    New York -- McDonald's named Julia Vander Ploeg as its first VP of digital in the U.S., as part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen its digital presence, Ad Age reported.

    Vander Ploeg will report to company’s chief digital officer, Atif Rafiq, who joined McDonald’s in October.
     

  • Shopsavvy upgrades mobile app

    Shopping site Shopsavvy announced an update to its mobile app this week that adds functionality for users who are looking for the right price on the product they want.  

    The update increased the number of participating retail outlets from fewer than 40,000 to about 500,000. Additionally, products can be tracked by their barcodes using the app’s built-in scanner.

  • Dick's firing on most cyclinders

    Dick’s Sporting Goods overcame weakness in its golf and hunting businesses to generate much better than expected second quarter same store sales and made further inroads in e-commerce.
