  • TechBytes: Five Hot Tech Trends from NRF 2015

    The National Retail Federation “Big Show” is always a good barometer of what trends will influence the retail technology landscape for the coming year, and the just-completed 2015 edition was no exception. Based on the buzz on the show floor and at keynotes and sessions, 2015 should be an eventful and possibly transformative year in retail IT.

    Here are five technology trends that really stood out.

  • Activist hedge fund Starboard Value pushes for Staples and Office Depot merger

    New York -- Activist investor Starboard Value LP, which helped put together the merger of OfficeMax and Office Depot, issued a letter on Tuesday calling for Staples Inc. and Office Depot Inc. to merge, saying it would lead to greater savings.

  • Sportsman's Warehouse offers military discount

    Sportsman’s Warehouse will honor those serving in the U.S. military and public safety occupations with a special promotion.

    On Military and Public Safety Appreciation Day, Jan. 24, 2015, the stores will offer discounts of up to 20%. Firearms, ammunition, optics and electronics will be offered with a 10% discount.

  • Report: J.C. Penney turns page on sales strategy

    The obituary for the printed retail catalog might have been a bit premature, if J.C. Penney is correct.

    The retailer is reportedly bringing back its big glossy paper catalog after new evidence surfaced suggesting that print catalogs drive sales, the Wall Street Journal reports.

  • Holiday sales up 1.5% at Michael's

    Michaels Companies Inc. had plenty to smile about during the 2014 holiday season -- its first holiday season since going public in June.

    Net sales for the eleven-week period from Nov. 2 to Jan. 17 increased 3.5% and same-store sales increased 1.5% from the comparable prior year period. For the full fourth quarter of fiscal 2014, net sales are expected to be in the range of about $1.59 billion to $1.6 billion, with an expected increase in same-store sales ranging from 0.8% to 1.2%. Michaels expects operating income to be $286 million to $291 million.

  • Roundy’s selects Market6 for vendor portal

    Deerfield, Ill. - Roundy’s Inc. has selected Market6’s retailer/supplier collaboration software platform, Market6 Foundation, to deliver a new vendor collaboration portal for Roundy’s enterprise-wide merchandising team and consumer goods supplier community.  Roundy’s needed a simpler, more efficient way to exchange information and work with its suppliers on a daily basis around shared high-value business processes, such as executing promotions, managing inventory, driving new item introductions, and reducing out-of-stock items.

  • Report: J.C. Penney to resurrect catalog

    Plano, Texas – Meet the new catalog, same as the old catalog. The J.C. Penney Co. Inc. is reportedly bringing back its print catalog, often referred to as the “big book,” which the retailer discontinued in 2010.

  • How Amazon wages price war with Walmart

    Retailers interested in fine-tuning their digital pricing strategies may want to look at a new index called the Price Perception Index.

    The index, created by e-commerce startup Bommerang Commerce, measures how retailers optimize prices to attract buyers, compete with other retailers and build their business on a mix of profit margins and volume.

    The first Price Perception Index looks at the complex competition between Amazon.com and Walmart.com.
