Sally Beauty Holdings Inc. has confirmed that there was an “illegal intrusion” into the company’s payment card systems. It is the retailer’s second data breach in a little over the year. Here are insights on the breach from four security experts:

Spartanburg, S.C. - Denny's Corp. is cooking up something good on the back end. The casual dining chain has chosen Havi Global Solutions LLC (HGS) as its lead supplier of supply chain and packaging solutions.

Atlanta - Havertys has promoted Tim Simpson to assistant VP, IT development. He started with the company in 2005 as senior java developer, in 2008 was serving as senior team manager, and since 2011 as director of development.  

New York - Shake Shack has chosen Accruent’s cloud solution for its project management needs. Shake Shack will use the project management system to support its growth in the U.S.

New York - Human error was the number one cause of data security incidents in 2014. According to a new report released by the Privacy and Data Protection Team at BakerHostetler, in the incidents that the firm worked on in 2014, employee negligence was responsible 36% of the time.

That was followed by theft by outsiders (22%), theft by insiders (16%), malware (16%) and phishing attacks (14%).Incidents were self-detected 64% of the time. Of the incidents reported by a third party, 27 % were due to theft.

Reston, Va. -- Nearly one-half (44%) of retailers used more than five mobile business applications in 2014, while 82% of retailers were able to build a mobile business app in one day or less, according to the “2nd Annual Mobile Business Application Survey” of business and IT decision makers by Canvas.

Among the key survey findings:

San Francisco - Visa Inc. is expanding its technology research capabilities globally and appointing Min Wang to senior VP of Visa Research Labs. Wang joins Visa from Google Research, where she was a senior staff research scientist focused on data mining.

She also held senior staff research roles at HP Labs China and at the Unified Data Analytics Department at the IBM Watson Research Center.

Roanoke, Va. - Advance Auto Parts Inc. has selected Teradata as the vendor of choice for its Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW).

Advance Auto Parts will leverage the EDW to aggregate data from multiple sources to perform advanced analytics and help drive the business.

The new Teradata platform at Advance includes testing as well as production and will leverage the Teradata Americas Data Migration Center of Expertise

The upcoming Oct. 1, 2015, mandate for U.S. retailers to adopt POS systems that can securely accept and process transactions using EMV (Europay, MasterCard, Visa)-compliant, chip-based payment cards is fast approaching. Retailers that are not in compliance with the mandate after that date will be held liable for any fraudulent transaction committed with a chip-based card.

New York – Omnichannel specialty fashion retailer Rachel Comey is now accepting payment via EMV-compliant, chip-based payment cards, as well as Apple Pay, in its New York store. Rachel Comey is using EMV- and Apple Pay-enabled, cloud-based mobile POS devices from Highline Software.
