  • Plug Power to supply GenDrive fuel cells to Kroger

    Latham, N.Y. -- Plug Power announced that it will supply 161 GenDrive fuel cells to Kroger’s food distribution center in Compton, Calif. Kroger will use the renewable energy source to power its fleet of electric lift trucks. Because GenDrive is fueled with hydrogen, the only byproducts created through the electrochemical energy-conversion process are heat and water.

  • Survey: Retail theft up

    New York City -- Retailers lost $37.14 billion to theft last year, or 1.58% of retail sales, up from 1.44% in 2009, according to preliminary results of the National Retail Security Survey. The annual survey is conducted by the University of Florida for the National Retail Federation, with funding from ADT Commercial.

    As in previous years, employee theft accounted for the largest (approximately 44%) portion of the losses. Shoplifting and organized retail crime was second, with 33%. Administrative errors, vendor fraud and unknown causes make up the rest.

  • Chico’s Stephen Carvelli takes Oracle’s Retail Executive of the Year award

    New York City -- Stephen Carvelli, director of eCommerce at Chico’s FAS, was honored as Retail Executive of the Year at the 2011 Oracle Retail Excellence Awards. Carvelli was cited for his advocacy of cross-channel technology and knowledge of how e-commerce technology is applied in retail environments. Chico’s also was honored in the category of “Outstanding Achievement in Customer Experience.”

    The awards were announced at the annual Oracle Retail CrossTalk event, held June 21-24, at Westfields Marriott, Washington, D.C.

  • Cheesecake Factory to use PeopleAnswers for pre-employment selection

    Dallas -- Web-based hiring assessment provider PeopleAnswers said Tuesday that The Cheesecake Factory will use the PeopleAnswers HR solution in its 164 restaurants to pre-screen and select hourly staff.

    The objective is to fill each position with individuals who will help maintain The Cheesecake Factory’s quality brand.

    NEW YORK  — Samsung Electronics America has launched a first-of-its kind LCD refrigerator complete with apps for keeping track of recipes, schedules and more. 

    The Samsung refrigerator includes the following apps:

    • Recipes from Epicurious

    • Organizational tools from Google Calendar

    •  Notepad

    • Entertainment from Pandora

    • Photos from Picasa Web Albums

  • Dollar General optimizes pricing services with DemandTec

    SAN MATEO, Calif. — DemandTec announced that Dollar General will use DemandTec's markdown optimization, everyday price optimization, and everyday price management software services.  According to DemandTec, these three services are designed to enable retailers to optimize and strategically manage pricing for the entire store, including new items, regular retails, promoted items, and clearance items.
